"Did you ever see things in vegetables?" (I did once. But that was in college. And I'm pretty sure that guy put something in my drink...)
"Here is an opportunity to create all kinds of wonderful animals." (Yep. This gives a whole new meaning to the concept of "Franken-food." Makes those genetically-altered foodstuffs look almost harmless...)
"Sculpturing" in this fashion is fun for one person or for a group of people." (Welcome to Post-Modern Sculpture 101. Everybody grab a cucumber...)

From a "Make-Your-Own Decorations, Gifts and Atrocities from Vegetables" Book, published in 1965. If you'd like to make Bashful Bunny, Tommy Turtle, Piggy, Golden Duck, Charlie the Centipede (nice gams!), George the Giraffe or Ollie the Octopus (wow! the creative team really worked overtime on those names!!), please feel free to email me for complete directions!  Grin (I'll be in the kitchen playing with my food!)  Roll Eyes

Darn it, it's this kind of thing that gives "craft" a bad rep.  Wink

when i was about 9 i turned some vegetables [carrot, potato, squash, parsnip] into a group of people and entered them in a competition at the school fair Shocked.  used toothpicks to add currants, bits of orange peel and stuff for the faces and dressed them in doll clothes i had made.   made crochet chain for the hair.  got 2nd prize - think the category was called 'most original group of dolls'.  won some dumb book, which i doubt that i read!  Shocked LOL at the nude man carrot

there is a range of greetings cards in the UK, don't know if they have them across the pond, with pictures of animals made of fruit & veg on them. they are even better than the personality vegetables.

damn damn damn can't find a picture.

Could you please post a link if you find one to the "nude man carrot"?  Wink. (I hate searching for anything with "nude man" in the phrase  Roll Eyes) Thanks.

These are great. There's some recipe I've seen for hors d'orves that looks like penguins, but they have some really freaky ingredients. I used to make mashed potato sculptures, but only because there was always a plethora of really bad mashed pot.s in the dining hall at MSU.
