Guitar Art Challenge

Earlier this year I was selected along with 16 other artisans by a nearby community for an Art Challenge.  We were all given guitars to create on and with. 

I am a ginormous Beatles fan.  Always have been.  My favoritest all time Bealtes song is "Here Comes the Sun".  If you're familar with the song you will know that the introduction to the song is a guitar solo.  The music score along the side of the guitar is that music.

The facemask was formed in my kiln.  It was a single layer of cathedral glass draped over a ceramic mold.  I also fused the moon in the kiln using two layers of the same glass.  The round dots for the music notes were a single layer of black glass fired in the kiln to create cabachons. 

I used "Mac" glue to adhere the various types of glass to the guitar.  Mac glue was recommended to me ages ago by HSG here on Craftster.  If you're thinking about doing a mosaic, I would also highly recommend the use of that glue.  It's the BEST.  Hands down.

As any glass artisan knows...photographi ng glass is a real pain in the a...!  So what you won't see on my photographs is the fact that behind the face mask is a mirror.  So you if you look face on to the mask you'll see yourself.  Kind of creepy cool and totally unexpected.   

The blue background glass starts out at the bottom a very light blue and as it progresses up the guitar it becomes more cobalt to a dark midnight blue at the top. 

So.  There ya go.  I don't even want to think about how many hours I have into this thing.  It was a lot.  A LOT!  But I'm very proud of how it turned out.   I hope you like it too!

This is by far one of the most amazing things I've seen on Craftster - just breathtaking and amazing and I want it!  Wonderful art piece - I would love to have this.  You are a genius artist.

Your guitar is gorgeous! The blues and yellows/golds are so perfect. the music notes on the sides must have taken a lot of time.

Glad you tried and liked the MAC glue. It is really the best I've used so far.

Been coming back to check it out, and have to say the attention to the details is wonderful.

Creating the face, the moon and the dots for the music notes, is time consuming. But so worth the effort.

fiddlegirl8: In the many years that I've been crafting and creating to actually be called an "artist" is really something special for me.  This piece makes me feel like I have really earned that moniker.     Thanks for saying it!

HSG:  And thank you for noting the attention to detail.  That's what I focused on.  It's the little things like that really can make a piece shine! (That and I'm as anal as all get out! I just gotta make sure that it's as perfect as I can get it...and still keep my sanity! LOL!)

Speaking of shining....So.  One major lesson I learned with this mosaic?  Yeah.  Don't EVER use textured glass with mosaics.  Unless you're a glutton for punishment and enjoy spending hours and hours with a dental pick scrapping grout out of the waves and ripples of said textured glass.  Yikes.  Literally 10+ hours of just detailed cleaning.  With a pick. Two days worth of time.  *sigh* 

But in the end the textured glass did really added some oomph to the piece. 

Thanks again everyone!  I'm pretty proud of this piece and think it turned out pretty darn good.  It's good to know that others agree!
