My Thread Keeps Breaking

The thread on my sewing machine keeps breaking, it works for about 2 inches then it snaps. I think I've found the problem but I'm not sure how to fix it.

I was sewing on a dress, and didn't know it had boning in the bodice. When I was sewing I hit the boning and my needle broke. I replaced it and avoided the boning. But now everytime I try to keep sewing, the thread breaks like I mentioned. It looks like the needle is rubbing on the metal plate where it picks up the bobbin thread and wears out the thread in a few passes. I've replaced the needle, thread, and tried many suggestions on how to fix it.

Is there any way to fix this problem? I'm in the middle of a very large project and have another waiting. Its very frustrating. I'm reasonably new to using a sewing machine and have been troubleshooting all over the place. Any help would be appreciated.

strange, it sounds like the needed is bent, but you said you replaced the needle (a new one?) check along where the needle is rubbing on the plate, is the plate rough? it might be rubbing away at the thread.

cheap thread is a PITA and always breaks.

have you tried new everything, thread, needle, fabric, newly filled bobbin etc..

otherwise I am afraid you might have to call in the professionals.

Sometimes when you hit something it knocks the needle arm out of alignment.  Unless you REALLY know how to fix your machine, your best bet is taking it to a professional.

it could be that the fabric is too thick. two layers of denim might be OK, but you know when you are sewing anything you often go through 4 layers, also make sure you have a sharp needle and again sounds like your tension might be off. if yours is the kind of machine where the bobbin goes into a housing and then clips into the machine, the tension on that could be off too.
