I love funky stationary sets...I also don't love how E-mail and the internet takes away from sending or receiving a nice letter. Does anyone else think so?

If we get some nice new fancy stationary, maybe it'll inspire us to send out those letters!

Hmmmm... I recently joined the Letter Writers Alliance and I'm thinking that some snazzy new stationery would help me get started on my goal to write and send more letters... So, I'll have to keep my eye on this...

I like this idea. I like to send cards with my swap items but I don't take time to make them. This way I'd have to make some and I'd get ones in return.

I don't think I could host the swap though. I just started a full time position at my job and have been crazy busy.

If we waited until mid-June, I could host it. But, I'd need some input on what the swap parameters should be...

I guess each person could pick a few themes or one theme. I'm wondering if it should be like the atc swaps where everyone has a few partners.

In the Granny's Daughters Swaps that I organize, folks can have 1-3 partners. What makes it a challenge to organize is allergies... but I can't see that being a problem with paper!

Should people have the option to receive stationery sets vs notecard sets?

I hadn't thought about themes! Maybe people can list 3-5 themes for their partner(s) to choose from.

And, what should be the minimum number of items swapped? Four notecards? Six? Eight? Or the equivalent in sheets of stationery? Plus envelopes, of course.

For simplicity's sake, I'd like to keep it just to the notecards/stationery and not add in a bunch of extra things like matching pens, or stationery boxes or folios (of course if partners agree to do extras, that's great!).

Also I like the idea of having 3 partners, but maybe not themes. I think it would be cool if each swapper designed their stationery and sent that out to all three partners (sort of like the sweatshop swaps). I sometimes find themes kind of limiting. Also it always seems like I end up being really proud of 2 of my items and less proud of the third, lol. This way each swapper could come up with one idea that she's really proud to send out!

I would say each "set" should be 8 notecards or 10 sheets of stationery (that's usually how I see them packaged). Does that sound reasonable? Just my ideas. Smiley

Thanks for the input, juliel85! I also have a hard time with themes on occasion. Sometimes, I get the best idea for one of my partner's themes, but other times, it just doesn't happen.

If you (that's a collective "you", not any one particular person Smiley ) chose your own theme, would you be able to make either stationery or notecards to fit it? To try to partner folks up based on what they'd like to make/receive could be a logistical nightmare. I think that I could make at least one of my ideas work for either stationery or notecards, but I'd like to know what others think.

I don't know if I could do stationary. I was thinking cards. All I could come up with on stationary is stamping on it. Not sure how else I would do it. I'm open to ideas, I just don't know.

Hmmmm... I could try to match folks according to preference, but it gets tricky when the numbers don't match up. I know I could make both notecards and stationery, but wouldn't want to receive notecards (I have quite the stash of handmade and store-bought notecards). That's where it could get tricky. Although if I needed to, I could do some match-ups where you send to one person and receive from another. If people have 3 partners, it could make it easier.

For ideas on how to make either notecards or stationery, you could:
Stamp (hand-carved or purchased, and you could even add color to the image)
Hand draw (borders, doodled images, lettering)
Paper cut
Use collage elements
Stencils
Paint

In one swap, I got some adorable owl cards where the owls were made out of fabric pieces. I'd advise against just slapping a sticker onto something, but I think that mos of the things that you could use for notecards could also be used for stationery.

And, as I typed the list, about 6 different ideas popped into my head...

If I set up the sign-ups to start by next weekend, run through mid-June and then have crafting time for about a month (so until mid-July), does that timeline fit for most folks?

I am in for this! I am always looking for great cards to send to kids that I work with.

I think doing it as a sweatshop swap would be the best way to go on this one. That way, people could chose how many sets to make and if they would rather make cards or stationery.

I've never participated in a sweatshop swap before. Do you make your items first and then have people choose them? Or do you just make the items and send the same thing to the three partners you've been assigned?

I articipated in one before. Each swapper makes their item(s) to offer. They post pics in the thread by a certain date. Then the seaports send their top 5 picks to the organizer who matches everyone the best she can. Then we mail our items to the people we are matched with.

The way this could look is that I would make 3 different card samples (if I wanted to receive 3 items). I would post them. Once I am assigned, I would send a set of 8 of those cards (plus envelopes) to each person that was assigned my card designs.

Make sense?

It makes sense... but what happens if you can't match everyone up?

And what if someone's stuff doesn't get picked by enough people (I'm worried, of course, that I may fall into this category Smiley )?

Could a person post a picture of a certain style of stationery/notecard, but customize it for their partners? For example, I'd like to make a certain style of stationery, but I could tweak certain parts of it to better match my partners' interests. I could post a list of options that my partners could choose from, but I wouldn't want to make a sample of every one. I could post an example of it as a notecard style, too.

And, I really do think that most notecard designs could be converted to stationery designs in some way (and vice-versa), so I'd really like folks to keep that as a possible option. I'll try to post examples of how that could work before sign-ups (once school ends or just before... I think that I might have time the weekend before).

When I did a sweatshop, I did not get all of my "top" choices. The organizer matched us up and we all got at least 1 of our top picks. If you search for Sweatshop swaps she explained it extremely well!

Thanks, texscrapper! As soon as I have some free time (hopefully by next Wednesday, after my grades are all turned in Smiley ).

Yay my idea is blooming into a real swap!!

You betcha! And, if all goes well with my grades this weekend, I should be ready to hit "post" on Tuesday afternoon. So, I can set up the swap Wednesday night. As it is right now, I just worked on some papers, and would be in excellent shape except I left my grade book on my desk, so I can't quite be caught up. I have stacks of notebooks and a project to grade between now and Saturday... and then one more project on Monday. Counting down the days!!

So, because I should be working on grading notebooks and random late assignments, I'm thinking about this swap instead... and what I could make...

And how to organize it... so, based on comments:

I definitely like the idea of a sweatshop style swap
I think 3 partners is a perfect amount for this swap (but someone could request only 1 or 2)
8 notecards or 10 sheets of stationery

Possible timeline (just throwing it out there to see what you think Wink ):
Once sign-ups start (around June 21st), folks will have 2 weeks to post pictures of their offering (a sample is okay, complete sets don't need to be posted)
One week to let me know your top picks
Then 2 (or 3) weeks for send-outs after I post partners

How is that sounding?

Okay, now that I've procrastinated for far too long, I need to grade notebooks...

I can try to match folks according to preference, but it might not always work out... so then I'll match folks according to what they'd prefer to receive (if I showed you my stack of notecards, you'd understand why I'm heavily into the stationery Wink ). I can make either, but I'd really prefer to receive stationery. I'd take fewer partners if it meant that I'd only receive stationery... but that's just me Smiley

Hmmm... AllyCatAria, sounds like we could end up as partners! Smiley

I'm hoping to get the swap started either Wednesday night or Thursday mid-day. I finish school with kids tomorrow, but have one more teacher day. Between now and 7:30 am tomorrow, I have 4 small quilt tops to stitch together and 48 baby shower favors to make (plus a gift to wrap).

I'll be a bit too wiped out tomorrow night to start the swap, and I may not be recovered by Wednesday Smiley

Well, I got 2 of the quilt tops half done, the baby shower favors made and my brain tricked me into getting up over an hour early so I could get to the 24 hour CVS to get the stuff to wrap the gift. I have to post my first assignment to my online summer class (after I take a brief restorative nap), and then I'll start putting together the questionnaire. If all goes as planned, I might be able to post it by tomorrow!

Of course, I still have to pack and clean my classroom...

I felt the same way about the ongoing swaps, but I like them much better because they are usually smaller items and you can claim as much as you want or as little as you want. If you want to make a bigger item you can. Plus I get to pick who I'm crafting for rather than some one else picking for me. Every once in awhile I get a swap partner that I am just clueless on. I like regular swaps too, but I really like the ongoing ones. My unknown is the sweat shop swaps. I'm sure I'll figure it out just fine, but they are an unknown.  Undecided

OH my gosh I'm a Note card MANIAC!!! I see all the little sets at Michael's $1 bins and I can't help but pick a few up every time I go there  Tongue Handmade is always better of course. I'm SO IN if I have room when it starts!

My unknown is the sweat shop swaps. I'm sure I'll figure it out just fine, but they are an unknown.  Undecided

Cheesy Oh Sweat shops are fun! I'm in one right now and they're SUPER easy it just looks like a lot because there's a lot of partners. Basically, you make five or ten of one specific thing (could be anything--> snack pouches, doilies, poppets, jewelry, note card sets, etc..... ANYTHING you want!). And then other people will make five to ten of another thing and when the swap is closed, there's a list of everything that people are "offering." Now depending on how many items you are offering, you will list the top 10-15 items you want from the other people.

(Example: Person A is offering bookmarks, person B is offering Glass pendants, person C is offering mug rugs..... and you want the mug rug most and the pendant least. You will put #1 Mug rugs from person C, #2 bookmarks from person A, #3 glass pendants from person B)

If you're offering five of one thing, then you will get five items; one from each of five people. If you're offering ten, you will get ten items in return. The swap organizer will then match you as best he/she can with your top picks from the other participants. Then you have to wait for all your partners to be done crafting their "offerings' before you can send. They also have to wait for YOU to be done before they can send to you as well Smiley
Most people will make their offered items before the swap even closes so it's less stress. Some people, like me, prefer to wait and custom-make my items to suit my partner's likes. It really is SUPER fun! Like---Christmas stocking stuffers in your mail box everyday! I LOVED the last round and decided to join the existing one.
    You should DEFINITELY try it!

I had to do a little juggling with the dates because of my schedule, but I think it works!

And, thanks IsikkahJai for explaining the sweat shop swap!

And, if anyone sees anything I should add to the swap explanation, let me know! This is the first time I've organized this type of swap Smiley
