Lamp shade for a little girl - featuring Elmer's products

My neighbors little girl loves orange flowers and her mom asked me to do a lampshade for her 'spring' bedroom.

First, I made a template by moving a pencil along the shade bottom and then the top as I rolled the shade. I used the back of some old Christmas wrapping paper as it's wide enough to draw the whole arc on.

I traced the template on to a large piece of watercolor paper (but poster board would work as well) and cut it out using my X-ACTO scissors. And then, using the Elmer's Paint Markers, I drew some stems and began filling in spaces with orange and red flowers.

I drew in some leaves and just kept going until I was happy with how it looked.

After letting the paint dry (about ten minutes) I cut the shade out and I glued velvet rick-rack to the top and bottom of the shade using Elmer's Craft Bond Dot Runner. I only needed half the width of the Dot Runner, so I put a piece of paper under the shade and ran the other half of the glue on to the paper, keeping the glue off of my work surface.

I taped the shade ends together from the inside, added rick-rack to the outside seam and hung it back on the lamp. This would be a fun project for children to participate in. After the template is cut out, a child could decorate their own bedroom lamp. A fun project to do for a holiday.... a Christmas shade would be adorable!

Great way to update a shade instead of buying a new one. Smiley

Right now, I'm looking at a desk lamp that I was planning to throw away. I might just have to reconsider that! Such a cute idea. I never would have thought of that.

So cute, I bet your neighbour loves it!  These paint markers look like a whole lot of fun...do they come in different nib sizes?

This is great, I've been wanting to make my own lampshades for awhile, but I never thought of using water color paper! This is a lot simpler than my ideas. But how did you attach it to the shade frame?

They do come in different sizes-a medium and a fine. They also come in color groups. I had the sherbets in medium and the brights in fine.

raennn- I didn't attach the temporary shade to the original because I knew her mom would want to change it out, and since it is smaller on top, it just naturally stayed up.
I did make sure that the seam in the back of the one I made was secure though!
