Mini Painting with Paint Pens! - featuring Elmer's products

I've been having a lot of fun playing with Elmer's Painters Pens. They are easy and fun to use, great for spontaneous projects when inspiration hits. Here's a quick project to get you going.

I started out with a 4x4 artist hard board, but you could use watercolor paper, canvas, just about anything. I noodled around, sketching until I had something that I liked. You can see I've got pencil marks all over the place. This was very relaxed and I didn't let myself get too fussy or picky, as I wanted this to look breezy and relaxed. I was thinking about flowers, poppies specifically, so this is what I got. You could also use a transfer, a copyright free design or even a personal photo printed off your computer.

I chose the blues and greens available in both the Sherbet Swirl and Bright Colors packs and started to fill in the 'petals', light blue first, then the darker blue, then the lime green.

I used my finger to kind of smoodge the colors around and blend them a bit.

Here is the board with all the petals filled in. You can see all the smudges where I wiped my finger clean on the paper underneath the project to keep from muddy-ing the colors when I was blending and smoodging. (very technical term!)

I let the board dry for a few minutes, then started filling in all the spaces with black. I didn't stay in the lines, so to speak, I just let the black move into the spaces and create shapes that were complimentary to the flower petals. If I didn't like the shape of a petal, I altered it slightly by adding black.

Here is what the little painting looks like with all the black done to my satisfaction.

After the black dried I started adding dots of the lime green and white where I thought they looked pretty! Then I cleaned up the outer black lines of the painting by penciling a pale straight line and painting along it, then filling in any remaining white on the inside of the lines. And there you have it! A neat project that only took about an hour and was lots of fun.

The black outlining and white dots really set off the colors you used.  This is a pretty little painting!
