First try at Fimo!
«
on:
April 14, 2012 08:44:58 PM »
This is something I swore I'd never try. Far to intimidating for me. It's not fluffy!!! But when I joined the Kids craft and swap with my son, I thought I'd buy some Fimo for him to play with. Well, guess what. I sat down with him and gave it a shot! It's not nearly as hard as I thought it would be! I'm no where near making some of the beautiful things on this board, but I even tried cane, and am kinda proud that the flowers I was hoping for came out looking like flowers!
And a few close ups
The red shoe did not turn out all that well, but you can tell its a shoe! (right?) And the pendant is rather large, but I love the sworlyness of it. I hadn't intended it to be a pendant to start, but hey, just go with the flow! and The robot bead was inspired by the silver fimo. I just had to make a robot head! The beads, bracelets and rings were made by my sons.
And the cane beads! Wewt! flowers! Yeah, they aren't completely solid where the black meets the purple, but good first try, right?
Thanks for looking! I'll be trying this again!

I've never gotten the nerve to try a cane. Good job! You'll be sculpting tiny plates of food before you know it.

Very nice!. . .and welcome to your next addiction
.
Love the twisted-rope spiral. And
of course
you had to try a robot head (understand that completely)...now you'll just need to add a clay body under it, or put the clay head on a body made with other materials, or just add an eyepin and wear it as a pendant, etc, or just keep it in an Experiment/Inspiration bowl.
Happy to see Craftster clayers trying canes too, and your flower cane looks good! I
promise
that many canes are a lot easier to make than a lot of the polymer sculpting you'll see, and they're so fun and limitless in possible patterns and uses. Your son can even do some canes (I started teaching them at my son's school in 3rd grade, but could have been even younger if one-on-one).
Btw, next time if you want to "fill" those triangular spaces/divots in the cane where the petals connect while making the cane, the simplest way is just to place a skinny snake of background-colored clay in between the tops of each 2 petal cane segments before adding the thicker layer of background clay all around the flower (you can also pinch one long side of the snake to make it fit even better into the divot). Then you'd want to make sure to compress the cane components well and also if reducing the cane to make the flower smaller. (That cane would also make a great pattern-cane if you placed several lengths together, reduced, cut into new lengths, joined, reduced, etc, till the pattern was as small as you wanted.)
....There's more info on making
flower canes
too on this page of my site if you want to get more info about that and also get lessons for making other kinds of flower canes or similar ones that are more complex in leaf pattern:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/canes--instructions.htm
(click on
Flowers
...and there will be many more flowers under the category called
Translucent-Opaque Canes
--those canes have transparent backgrounds)
You can also find a list of "
easier canes to start with
" at the top of that same page, under the category called
Beginner Canes
and also in my previous post here:
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=178586.msg1852235#msg1852235
Plus, here's my previous post at Craftster about those "floating," or translucent-background, canes (with links to some examples):
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=315990.msg3637917#msg3637917
P.S. For more on general info about making any polymer clay canes --rolling, reducing, slicing, etc-- check out these pages too:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/Canes--general.htm

Thanks Diane.
If we ever get serious about clay, I'll have a good look. Right now we are just playing around and having fun!

Recognized the shoe right off the bat, and then I looked to the left of the screen and saw Belladune?
I love your cane work pendant and the flower beads. Great job.
