SquiPod iPod Cozy - with TUTORIAL/PATTERN
«
on:
June 24, 2005 01:38:30 PM »
http://www.pinkhairedgirl.com/archives/SquiPod.JPG
Yarn: Brown Sheep Nature Spun, color 115 Bit of Blue, less than one skein. Tiny bit of misc black sport weight yarn for eyes.
Needles: Size 4 dpns
Gauge: 5 stitches per inch
Pattern:
Body:
Cast on 32 st. Join for knitting in the round. Knit 5 inches of stockinette.
Head:
One first round, bind off 16 stitches – the stitches on needles 3 & 4. On the next round, Cast on 16 stitches to replace the stitches you just bound off.
Switch to the following decrease pattern:
Rnd 1 – Needle 1 – k1, k2tog, knit to end of needle
Needle 2 – knit to last 3 stitches, ssk, k 1
Needle 3 – k1, k2tog, knit to end of needle
Needle 4 - knit to last 3 stitches, ssk, k 1
Rnd 2 – knit
Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until 8 stitches remain. Bind off in purl.
Back flap:
Pick up 16 st above where you cast off for the head. Knit in stockinette for 2 ¼ inches. Bind off.
Tentacles:
Sew together the cast-on edge of the body, using back stitch. Mark with safety pins 4 evenly spaced places on both the back and the front for the legs (8 places total). At each marker, pick up three stitches and work in I-cord for 2 inches.
Eyes:
For the eyes, I placed the cozy on my iPod, marked the center of the front, and then spaced the eyes so they were each two stitches out from the center. I duplicate stitched the eyes using the black yarn. Here is the pattern:
X
Finishing:
Using sewing thread, sew a snap on the back of the cozy and the wrong side of the back flap, so the cozy can be snapped shut.
*************
I hope people like it! Please feel free to ask if you have questions about the pattern, and if anyone makes it, I would love to see pictures of how it turns out.

That's so funny because when you first posted the photo of the squipod, I looked at the picture and made a pattern from it, and yours and mine are really similar. I, too, said to have a gauge of 5 st/in and co 32. However, in the version that I wrote up, the bottom is open with a small button on the back and a crocheted chain buttonloop, and the rest is all one piece, with a hole at the top for the headphone jack.
Nice job! I love this idea.
And I never posted my version of the pattern anywhere, am just using it for my own knittiness.

Yeah, it is from my hair. It's completely accidental - but people ask me about it all the time. I end up turning tons of things pink, I'm just sort of used to it.

Absolutely love it! Just a couple Qs though...
Did you use Nature Spun worsted or sport weight?
Do you have a pic of the back part?

Would it be hard to convert this into a cellphone cozy? I don't own an Ipod, but I love squid and I do have a cell!

I don't think it would be very hard - just make the "body" to fit your cell phone, instead of an iPod. The easiest thing might be to use a smaller gauge.

I kinda thought that, but since I haven't really adjusted too many patterns for my own needs, figured I'd ask as well. Anyway, great pattern, thanks!

Sorry to drag up an old thread (I'm a total newbie) but I've just made this pattern!
I've just started crochet so it's a little uneven. I used thicker wool too. Also on the tentacles I added lots of leftover shirt buttons for suckers!
I really enjoyed making it -thank you! About to give it to a friend for her birthday.

Do you have any specific suggestions for weaving in the loose ends on the tenticles? i've always been terrible at weaving in ends in general and these have me a bit stuck
