Thanks, guys!  I guess if I really want the same "look' as those two pieces, I am going to have to learn to crochet... eeep!!!
Any non-crochet ideas?  Any other ideas on yarn to use?  What is "lustresheen"- who makes it?

lustresheen is made by red heart, and very easy to work with. as for the knitting, i only know how to crochet  Sad  but i suppose anything where you wrap the stitches around each other to "chain" them would give a similar effect. hth!

Yeah, the dark red shawl is definitely crocheted.  You could probably use Lion Brand's Wool-Ease in Cranberry and get a similar look.  However, it's not a big triangle.  It's ALMOST a big triangle, but it actually has long, almost scarf-like square ends.

For the scarf, I can't really tell whether it's crocheted or a twisted drop stitch, and I was going to suggest a yarn, but it doesn't come in that color.  I wish I could find a closer-up picture so I could really see the scarf.  I'm tempted to say the yarn used on the fringe is NOT the yarn used on the scarf.

i was thinking the same thing, lothruin- it almost looks as if the fringe is similarly colored cut strips of silk or something almost ribbon-like.

See if you can find a shot of the ferret sweater while you're searching ...  Wink  My weasels would just love little sweaters, I'm sure ...

This is a really cute pattern for your ferret, though you may have to adjust the sizing! ;-)

Does anybody else here watch Dead Like Me? I've been watching season 2 on DVD and, in addition to there being a scene where some guy gets stabbed with knitting needles, the dad (Greg Kean's character) is wearing this really cool sweater in one episode-- it looks ribbed at first, but then you notice the ribbing sort of wanders. I found a not-very-good picture of it:

Does anybody know how this is done, or where to get directions for it?

There's a *kind* of similar pattern in a sweater in Loop-d-Loop - it's the sweater on the left on the cover (see it here)

If anyone is still interested in the oddyssey of my 'Big Fish' sweater recreation - it's going to be in the Fall knitty!!!  so keep your eyes open.
