Building a ball winder
«
on:
April 13, 2012 05:20:49 PM »
The folks that sell my drop spindles asked me to build them a ball winder, after doing some research I've decided I can do it. I'm basing the design on
this website
I'll be hand cutting the gears for this one, which is something I've not done before with much success. Right now I'm looking for advice on what works for you folks.

I have a Strauch Jumbo Ball Winder, which the homemade ball winder in your link is fashioned after.
The Strauch is the best design I've used.

Brief update on the ball winder project,
Primary issue is casting the gears for it. Failure at metal casting is still a good time all round.

No, trying and failing is beta testing.

Any progress on this project? My hubby and I are trying to replicate the Strauch Winder, but we'd love to see what others have been trying.

Some, I got a couple prototypes done, but nothing I'm happy with yet. The main problem I'm having is that I feel it is necessary to cut the gearing I need rather than buying them. The basic concept could be easily done using just a friction drive, but I like gears.
The above winder should be pretty easy to make if you are content with just using friction instead of gears for the movement. All the pieces on it are easily made on a lathe and had from a hardware store, that type of winder I'm quite capable of building, but it's just not interesting enough for me to be happy.
If you need a third brain involved in your project feel free to ask and I'll be happy to give you my input on any points you're stuck at.
