Knitting and Point Swaps

Can you give examples of what you consider a small knitted item.

Knitting takes a really long time for me and even things that appear small have taken me upwards of 5 hours to make:

(took 1 week to knit)

(took 10 days to knit)
(took 2-3 days to knit)

Are these all smalls? mediums? Large because of time?

Small is usually supposed to be 2 hours or less, right? So, I'd say a basic hat or scarf (no fancy stitches/patterns) made with bulky yarn would probably be a small. A single dishcloth with no cables and a basic pattern. A coffee cozy. A headband. A baby hat. A feltable soap cozy. A bracelet. Er... a hackysack? A wrist warmer (or a set)? A teddy bear hat? A sink scrubbie?

These are just my opinion, of course. I also tend to factor in material cost and fun factor. If the materials are super cheap I'm willing to invest some extra time; really expensive, a little less. If it's something I really enjoy making I'm willing to spend a little more time; if it's boring or otherwise un-fun, a little less. It's all relative!

I never use the time guidelines when knitting. Everything I make would be large I think it'd be easier to show you what I've sent as small-medium-large. But in the end you have to make the call.

This scarf took a bit less than two weeks to knit (knit in the evenings and on busses if I remember correctly)



I sent that scarf in a swap where I needed to send a medium item. It wasn't hard for me to make, and the yarn is nice but not super expensive so I personally wouldn't count it as a large. Maybe a largeish medium.


This was made on and off during a week, but the knitting probably only took a few hours. I count this as a small.


This? A large. It took more than a month and I probably wouldn't have knitted it if it wasn't for a knitting/crocheting swap. We all went in with the knowledge that we would invest more time than the standard craftster "large".

Nice work on those trees! I'd say your flower is small, the others are harder to decide.

Knowing what goes in to knitting...if I received a hat I would consider it at least a medium!  A hat and scarf set would be a large to me...but that's just me personally.  I crochet and it takes me a couple days just to do a hat.

I rarely knit/crochet anything bigger than a dishcloth for a swap Although I have done baby things a few times (mediums) and once I crocheted a shawl that took somewhere around 90 hours (maybe not, but it certainly FELT like it took that long  ).  A few times I've seen hand-knit socks shown as a medium and I guess size-wise they are, but a plain adult-size pair in sock yarn takes me around 20 hours, which puts it in the 'large, but doesn't look like it' category.

thanks for starting this as it's great to see what everyone thinks.

I've only knitted toys for swaps.  A set of 3 fish was part of a large, and small toy was a small.

i think it depends on WHO you craft for. I do not knit, crochet, sew or anything involving a needle LOL. So, to ME, personally, a hat would be at least a medium, probably a large. A crafter who knits might have different expectations based on how long it would take them to make X, but I'm totally ignorant to time and figure it must take forever to make it.

I'm a crocheter, but never a knitter, so anything anybody gave me that was knit I would just assume was large to extra-large because it would take me approximately forever to have made it.
