Hand Painted Rovings

Learning to dye roving has been a recent thing for me, but I love it! I've gone through almost 3 pounds of wool in just a couple days. My husband said he's happy that I found something I like to do, so we'll hope he says the same thing when theres wool hanging in the shower and he can't use it. I started out using Easter egg dyes, PAAS Neon to be specific, then I moved on to Wilton's Icing Coloring. I almost like the colors of that better, they're so bright! Picture time!

I'm getting better! used egg dye on this one too. Citrus 2.0 ( decided to name them because they actually look nice now. )

Hand-me-down Summer- Wiltons Icing Coloring

Tie Dye- Wiltons Icing Coloring

Cotton Candy- this one is my favorite so far. Used Wiltons on this one too.

Pretty colors!!  I really like the last one - cotton candy!

I love using the egg dyes too...I'm going to buy up a ton of easter egg dyes when they go on sale this year to dye fiber!   When you use the Wilton colorings...do you mix it with vinegar?  I've never used them to dye yet.  Do they give a brighter color than the egg dyes?

I did use vinegar, and the colors I got almost hurt my eyes! They're so bright and vibrant. I used about 1/8 of a teaspoon of dye and 1/4 cup of vinegar in a 12 oz (it think, it might be 16 oz. i took the label off) squirt bottle, then filled it almost to the top with water. I did it with all the colors, even the pink. You can always check your color on a paper towel before you use it too, just to make sure you're happy with what you have. I let my wool soak in a sink full of water and about a cup full of vinegar for half an hour before I dyed it, and I steamed everything for half an hour in my canning pot to set the dye. The rinse sink was clear after I took it out of the plastic wrap, so I'm pretty sure everything worked right. lol. I'm buying vinegar by the gallon now. Little bottles don't cut it.
