This is one of the easiest little gadgets I have ever made and for the nursing mom, I think it is horribly useful and a great idea! I have personally never used a nursing cover. Just always covered up with one of babies blankets. But we all know that sometimes those flailing baby arms pull the blanket down. And I know my husband would not appreciate another man suddenly getting a free show!! So, for this next baby due in two months, I had been contemplating making a nursing cover for myself. We are taking a big family vacation with brothers and bil's...so I thought a cover might be wise.
Instead of a cover, I made a strap that can attach to any blanket you have on hand. Do you have a summer baby? Clip it to a light weight blanket and don't sweat!! Winter baby? Freezing under there? Use a soft bulky blanket to cover up and baby still can't yank it off! I LOVE this thing!
All you need is 1/8 yd of fabric.
1 yd fusible interfacing (optional but I always have it hand and wanted my strap sturdier)
**you could also use cotton webbing, a belt...even sturdy trim**
2 curtain rings with clips attached or suspender clips.
Cut a piece of fabric 29"x3"
Cut a coordinating piece of fusible interfacing
Adhere interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric.
Fold fabric strip length wise in half. Using a 3/8" seam allowance sew together down the open side leaving a hole for turning. I tapered each end so the fabric would feed through the rings easier. It also seemed to give it a more finished look.
Clip the corners to remove bulk then turn the fabric right side out. Press the strip all the way around then topstitch all the way around with a tiny seam allowance. You should also catch the open hole when you topstitch as well.
I plan to loan this to a friend who is currently nursing and see what she thinks of it. I can't wait to use it! Cause when I do...that means my hips will no longer be hurting...I'll be able to roll over, sleep on my stomach, and oh! Most importantly, I'll be holding that new little babe in my arms!
What do you think??
