Not jewelry, not quite a trinket (to wear at least), but very definitely beaded!

I made these recently for the 100 things about me swap, Round 3.  My partner listed sushi as one of her 100 things and this project has been on my backburner for awhile, and the swap was a perfect opportunity to make this.

It was a rather finicky project but I love how they look all plated up.

My fish roe maki - either ikura or tobiko, your choice.  It has some bigger beads, so I am thinking ikura.

showing you their rice-y bottome (hah!  my maki is mooning you!)

My pickled ginger rosette and wasabi ball

My nigiri sushi - tomago on the left and ebi on the right

I plated it all on a pretty blue platter, with a traditional piece of plastic grass (what is with that?) that I had saved, and a pair of chopsticks, and vacuum packed it for safety - and freshness  Wink  - for shipping.

I posted more about it on my blog.  Very happy with how they turned out and may make a set for myself.

What do you think?

How incredibly cute! From the thumbnail I thought it was yarn (which on itself would have been a great job), but I really like that you used beads. I could just eat it up!

Oh wow, that's crazy awesome!

Question...are the pieces hollow or are they stuffed with...?

Shocked Wow, those look fantastic! They are beautiful and so lifelike that it's sort of insane, right down to the adorable packaging!

Your swap partner is one lucky lady!  Wink And oh yes, this rocks.

Thank you - I have been craving sushi like mad since I started this project.  I was going to make a little dish of soy sauce too, but forgot to add that.  Maybe if I make a set for myself I will add that.

All the pieces are stuffed, except the ginger.  I actually had some cotton batting saved from medicine bottles which I reused in some of them too.  Trying to bead around the fill is just a bit annoying I must say!

These are incredible!

With respect to the hassle with the cotton filling, you might want to consider affixing some clear tape around around the stuffing before beading around it (fewer little fibers escape, and it holds its shape).

Awesome work.

I think it did make me go a bit cross eyed for a few days after a long stretch of beading Cheesy

Good idea.  I was also going to consider using leftover bits of fabric next time too - I have lots of leftover bits of voile from the curtains I just made.

So, the plastic grass is to keep your food from touching.  It's especially helpful if you've got something that's crunchy and something that's wet packed together (Like packing your nori paper separate from your rice balls to keep it from getting soggy.) and is seen often in bento-style lunches.

I started beading from a necklace kit years ago and have picked up a lot of inspirational books since then - I am a bit of an addict for craft books, magazines, etc.  But some good basic books are Mastering Beadwork, and A Beader's Companion, for basic stitches and techniques for beading with seed beads.

I found the basic instructions in some past Bead and Button magazines - they have been on my to do list for awhile actually.

Basically, the ginger is a long strip of herringbone stitched beads, with a picot edging on the one edge.  Roll it into a rosette, and secure the base with the beading thread on the edge opposite the picot edging.

The rice balls are made with flat peyote, connected together, with some decreases to bring in the edges afterward, stuffed.  The nori wrap/rolls are peyote too.  The egg is square stitch.  The wasabi was in peyote with random increases/decreases to give an organic blobby shape.  The fish roe and the rice bottom are circular peyote, and I just freehand stitched different sized orange beads on the peyote base for the roe.  The shrimp is netting, and the rail is herringbone.  If you look at the Bead and Button site, you may be able to find the more detailed instructions - they are from either 2009 0r 2010.
