Eliminating tub in master bath and replacing with large shower. Good or bad idea?

Depends on your location and preferences. But what do you like, and why are you asking? 

Are you are in a water rationed area? -no question: good idea.
Do you really crave a huge shower? -I'd say go ahead.
Do you have a bathtub elsewhere in the house that could be used if you only like an occasional bath? - likewise, change it over.
Or is a shower over the bath quite adequate, but the bath rarely gets used as such? I'd say don't waste your money.
Are you renovating in order to sell? in which case local desires and needs come into it and I couldn't venture an opinion.

I renovated my bath last year and the same question came up. One thing that someone mentioned was re-sale - if there's no tub in the house at all, families with young kids won't want the house (because there's no tub for the kids too young to shower).

On the other hand, if there's no tub in the house, families without young kids probably won't care, seniors and people with mobility issues seem to prefer not having tubs.

So, it depends.
