Anytime I've seen this technique demonstrated, it's always with sterling silver wire. I can see how craft wire wouldn't work since this is usually coated copper or brass and the coating will mess that up. But what about copper or brass or gold filled or fine silver?

Copper, fine silver and brass work just fine. I've never tried with gold filled so I can't vouch for that one, but if I had to put money on it I'd say no. I may be wrong, though, so go ahead and try it.

And don't forget to flux!

Oh! I see what you're doing!

Copper and brass will work, gold filled I would think will work. You can use either a borax paste or soldering flux for keeping the metals clean, I'd suggest the borax for anything harder than copper. You can do the same on steel as well, provided you have a torch than can get to the temperature necessary.

The cool thing about copper is if you quickly drop the piece in cold water the ball will turn a lovely shade of pink .
