Lady Gaga Pointed Shoulder Pattern/Technique

For some reason, I can't get my head around how the pointed shoulder/puff sleeve look is achieved.


I want it to look like that. Anyone have any light to shed on the subject?

well there's a few ways you could do this. my guess that the way its done in the pic is that collar part is extended out past the shoulders and folded over and the fabric's got a heavy interfacing underneath to give it some body. if you wanted to keep that part of the fabric really stiff you could use a fabric stiffner like fabric starch or a good strong permanent one is a brand called Stiffy. You could sew wire into the edge of the fabric on the shoulders. or you could just make the shoulders like little triangle pillow.

I've yet to try the technique myself, but I'm pretty sure it's just a cowl sleeve, but made of a stiff/interfaced fabric. Here's pix from two different books on Vintage Sewing:



The length of the "point" would be determined by how much you spread the sleeve halves, I should think. Also, for a nice crisp point, you wouldn't round out the added portion at the top of the sleeve head.
