There's a weird looking spot on my knitting.  I'm a total newb to knitting and am not sure what this is. Where the stitches are slanted.

It looks like you forgot to drop the stitch after you knitted it. I would keep going though, it doesn't look that bad. One thing I recommend when you're first learning to knit.. start off with a number of stitches you'll remember.. so like 10, 15, 20 .. something easy. After each row recount the stitches to make sure you still have your original number you started with; if you have less then you dropped a stitch, if you have more then you forgot to slide the stitch off after knitting it.

while I was waiting for a reply on this I posted to another site.  The consensus there was that I probably accidentally purled.  I looked at the work and it does look kinda like that.  I started with 8 cast on and still have 8 stitches on there.
