I'm thinking a variety of dollar store or thrifted picture frames,  leave out the glass and frame some brightly colored scrapbook paper.  Then use some Command Adhesive tape to attach them to the doors.  Command Adhesive comes off without much effort and doesn't damage the surface that is is used on.  I use it to hang everything so I don't have to make nail holes.

I love the picture frame idea, monstergramma!I may still do that. here's the link to my post about decorating it. It looks a lot better, but I still hate the cabinets. Especially since I realized that the hardware on one side of the kitchen was different than the hardware on the other.

Instead of painting the hardware, I would try to remove the paint (oo, shiny hinges!)  and use poster putty to hang lightweight pictures on the doors.  Coordinating prints, photos, or fabric would work.

Has the homeowner considered stripping the cabinets down to the bare wood?  I'm curious about what lies beneath.

Hi There. I don't know if you figured anything out yet, but I would make some "slip covers" out of some fabric that you could slip over the doors from the side where you open them..kind of like an envelope. Hope this makes sense.
It would be pretty easy to make, and you can remove them and wash them when ever you want.

They are actually unique but need to repaint it, use spray color for hinges as per your favorite color. Or just glue some kitchen theme stickers.
