As threatened I decided to start building some more drop spindles, not done yet but I figure I'll share where I'm at and what I've gotten done thus far.

First off wood, I've got bits and pieces from other projects, if they are big enough they go in the bag.

Couple different types of wood in there, black walnut, zebra, purple heart, orange wood (not from an orange tree), oak, and cherry. Might be maple as well in there somewhere.

Next lay out the pieces that I'm planning on gluing up, type of glue is kinda important.

I use a couple pieces of 1/4" steel plate to compress everything after gluing things together.

I cut a couple pieces of black walnut to use for the central spindles.

45 min later everything is set enough to take the clamps off and start doing things.

Do some geometry and figure out how to cut what you want, then lay it out, sand anything out of kilter angle wise.

I've got a fellow carpenter with better access to exotic hardwoods than I, he's the one that hooked me up with most of the wood that I made these spindles with. I teach him a few things and vice versa, and we exchange lumber on occasion. I snag chunks of local hardwoods and mill them down into planks and whatnot with my chainsaw.
In case you are wondering what woods I have access to for my area,
American Hornbeam, Willow, Red and White Oak, Hawthorne, Black Walnut, Dogwood, Poplar, Cedar, Apple, Cherry, Hickory, Pine, Hemlock, Maple, and a couple others that escape me right now. All from deadfalls and other trees that have come down in the area.

Remember this one?

It's done! Someone already offered me something in trade, so it's currently spoken for. The others will be distributed in some manner or other, after all, how many of these do I really need?

This one came out much better than the previous experiments, it ended up much longer and more spindley that previous efforts. Haven't attached a hook to it yet, but I'm really happy with the center shaft, and the color scheme is not great, but good all round.

It seems that I'm not the only other carpenter making these, which pleases me immensely.
