ok - question for all you hand dyers!

I was given some yarn of unknown content a while ago and been using kool-aid and food colouring to dye it but getting some really weird results - blue dye gave green yarn, green dye = yellow yarn and strangest of all today red dye has given me GREY yarn! (used vinegar with all of them)

Any ideas whats going on? (I'll also pop over to the yarnie forums and have a look at info there) I don't really mind, as its more interesting, but interested to get some idea about what is going on Grin

Did we ever figure this out?  I'm curious as well Smiley

Not really but I did have another look at the vinegar I was using, and realised it was pickling vinegar, so stronger than normal and had 'pickling spices' added (no idea what they are as not listed individually) so guessing thats why I've been having funny colours!
So now we know what to do if we want a surprise - add spices to extra strong vinegar Cheesy

Cool swap idea!   Smiley   I bought this pattern a few months back but I haven't started on it yet.   Looking forward to seeing the gallery.  Smiley

I read somewhere one time that you don't have to use vinegar with kool-aid because it has enough acid (or something??) in it.  Let me see if I can find the link...

This is the tutorial I've been using.  I dyed all my yarn for the Fiber to Fashion challenge with kool-aid.  I didn't use vinegar at all and it came out the right color.

Here's the cool chart of kool-aid colors:

I am planning on posting kool-aid and egg dying tutorials on craftster but haven't got around to it yet.  I have the pictures and everything ready just need the time to post. Smiley

Yep...I believe there's enough citric acid in the kool-aid mix so you don't need to use vinegar Smiley

Thank you!!

I can't get kool-aid over here, wish I could, and although I have been sent some in other swaps (thank you swappers!) I don't have many 'flavours' so gonna have to find a way to make all those gorgeous colours in other ways.

I can't believe you sent already mini_mum!  I need to figure out how to wrap mini skeins from the post a few pages back.  I probably won't be sending until close to the send out day when I have more money for postage.

I'd got everything all ready after signing up - it was one thing I *could* do while the boys were ill, so all I had to do was pack up and address envies once lists were posted.
I'm usually way later than this, so really chuffed to get one off so quickly. Cheesy
