Not 100% sure this is where they belong, but I'm gonna share anyway.
I made these today, quite pleased, now I just need some fiber to spin.

*edit: photos removed, seem to have deleted them by mistake*

I'm working on building a spinning wheel too, but these were easier and a hell of a lot more fun for a short term day project.
If you're wondering the woods are mostly South American hardwoods, the center spindle is red oak, I might do more of these, just gotta figure out what to do with them when I'm done making them.

*Edit: April 13, 2012
If you've not noticed by now I'm still making these, here is the current batch I've dropped off at my local retailer.

Bah, they're not but glue and wood. Anyone with a lathe can make these all the day long if they have a mind to, beautifully simple.
The trick is to make em pretty, that's where the challenge is.

These two were tests for a couple different methods of construction for gluing up things for turning on my lathe more than anything else, I'm still thinking on a couple different designs and forms for these. Feedback would be welcome regarding style, function, and form.

Oh, and the rod at the top is a phosphor bronze braizing rod, you can get em for about 10-15 cents each at the right welding store, helpful if you are planning on making one of these yourself. Wait a min, that is a thought, anyone want me to do a step by step of how I built these (and plan on building more this weekend)?

I want to make one of my own so badly that isn't made of an old cd and some rubber washers. Your drop spindles are inspiring. I will have to do this soon, or this year at least. Smiley

I'm an odd duck when it comes to selling my works, I much prefer trading and bartering over selling. Putting a price tag on things I build for fun is just so damn hard, my feelings on it is that as it cost me next to nothing to make it and I had a hell of a good time, I should pass that fun on to others at a comparable cost.

Anyone with a lathe...
And how many of us do you think have lathes?
These are way better than the dowel and toy wheel spindles I make.
You gonna start joining C-ster swaps now, since you plan on making so many? Wink I bet any number of us would send you wool in return.
I have a hard time even thinking of selling my creations, also, even if I don't make them for me or know who I made them for.

The better question is how many older folks (parents, grandparents, etc) have lathes and an interest in carpentry?

More than you think.

I don't have a lathe and I think my dad sold his when they moved after retirement because he never used it. However, if you would do a tutorial, that would be awesome. I may find someone who has a lathe and be able to buy some beer or make dinner if they would make me one...
