The Raging Sloth - silverwork is just like goldwork but a different colour!  You lay the thread on top of the background and couch it down.  The books I used to learn the techniques are the Royal School of Needleworks book on Silk Shading and A Beginner's Guide to Goldwork by Ruth Chamberlain - they were very helpful.
