So,ages ago I bought two white wraparound skirts, one with green embroidery, one with purple, thinking I would make aprons. I didn't. Turns out they were kiddo's size. I used acrylic paint to color in between the embroidery, heat set it. Then I tea dyed that sucker. It washes just fine! She loved it. Here's a shot of the fancied up embroidery-can't get her to pose for a skirt picture!

EDIT-wrong picture~

Okay, that has to be the best new idea this week. We've all seen that machine-embroidered fabric and thought "I wish it had a bit of colour", but you've shown how to fix it!

Well, I can't sew, so I had to do something, *grins* Thanks, Wulf! I used luminere brand acrylic paints, heat set them with a thin press cloth and an iron. I filled the biggest pot I had with cheap tea, let it steep forever, simmered the skirt for a while. It came through the washer and dryer with no loss of color. Yeah, I'll be keeping my eye open for more embroidered clothing from now on!
