"Hummingbird River" - a bit more artsy and asymmetrical than my usual work. This piece is a story necklace. It features a silver plated curb chain & fire polished faceted crystal river, a gunmetal wire nest with white jade eggs, a silver plated (and very determined) hummingbird flying amongst glass leaves in the sacred forest, and stacked gradated Swarovski crystal fire flame (is askew in the picture, unfortunately).

You can read the story of the hummingbird and the forest fire here: http://hummingbirdstorytelling.blogspot.com/

I'd value any feedback you can provide. This is a special project for a friend, and I'd like it to be the best I can make it before she receives it.

I like it, but it has a lot going on.  And the wire that the nest is made of seems to be matte, compared to the shiny-ness of the rest of the necklace.

That said, I love that you made a piece with a story!

I wonder if it would be better to either eliminate the nest entirely or to remake it in silver.

Your thoughts?

Thanks for that awesome suggestion! Here it is without the nest.

Better or worse?

What else might I do to improve this piece?

TIA,
~CD~

Personally, I like it better without the nest.

(And thank you for not being offended!)

(Maybe make nest earrings, if you wanted to include them somehow?)

I like it better with the nest. I think without it the left side looks too heavy (if that makes any sense.)

I'm fond of the nest, myself. Not sure what to do about that exactly.

Here's a third version I just finished (I've been working on this all day). Maybe the third time is the charm. On this one, instead of the nest and the individual leaves, I surrounded the bird with a stone-leaf-stone element on both sides. I *think* that adds some visual "weight" to the other side. I'm torn.

It's vital that this piece tells the story. It's an Ecuadorian folk tale in which a hummingbird flies to and from a river with a single drop of water in her beak, doing whatever she can to douse the flames that threaten her home, while the other animals feel hopeless and therefore do nothing. I like that the fancy jasper stones add an earthy feel among the flora.

Am eager to hear your feedback and suggestions.

TIA,
~CD~

Asymmetrical necklaces are tough to make. The most important thing to remember is the heaviest part of the necklace will always fall to the center. I like the nest if it is part of the story then you should use it. Maybe if you add something else that matches the color of the nest like a couple metal beads it will help tie the nest into the necklace. I think that the jasper beads look better and fill in that side more they might help balance the necklace too. I would wear the necklace around the house and see what it does.
