I made a two-headed cat.

Then I decided I needed another one.

I kept track of how the second one was made.

First, I made a sketch and an armature out of foil.

Then I started adding the clay, and some wire to reinforce the legs.

More clay. At this stage it is just an ugly pink blob creature.

This is before and after baking. The eyes are glass beads that were set in place temporarily to ensure a perfect fit.

The eyes were removed, and the painting began.

And finally done!  Grin The eyes are glued in and the entire cat is finished with a matte varnish to protect the paint job.

These are great!

What kind of clay did you use?  I love the step by step you provided.  I am wanting to try to do some art dolls (I usually just do jewelry pieces) and seeing different ways of doing armature is really helpful!

Thanks!

I used super sculpey to make them.
I've tried a lot of different clays, but that's the one i get along with the best.  Smiley

That is gorgeous! I have to say I like the first one more than the second, because of the symmetry of it. But they're both beautiful. What did you use to paint it, acrylic?

I would not have guessed these were made with super sculpey - when I saw them my first impression was "wow, I'll never get to make anything like that as I don't have access to a kiln"

What kind of wire to you use for the armature?

The blue one is about 10 inches long, and just under 6 inches tall.
The red one is 10 inches tall.

I only wish I had access to a kiln! If I ever got enough money to get a small kiln and pay to have the electrical work done to hook it up I would happily evict my car from the garage.  Grin  As for the wire, its just a mix of jewelry wire and floral wire. I don't think it matters too much what kind you use, as long as it is thick enough to give the support you want. Although some colored wire will bleed into the clay, so don't use those unless you plan to paint everything anyway.

They really are adorable! And what a nice idea to give a cat two heads, even though I am afraid these two heads might get into fights from time to time. Cats (and therefore probably their heads also) are a bit self-centered after all Smiley

Those are lovely! And step-by-step pictures are really helpful. The thumbnail of the first blue one reminded me the cartoon CatDog, but then I realized it was more like CatCat Smiley
