So - I received a polymer clay mosaic from MissingWillow in the Mini 13 days of Halloween swap last year and it inspired me to make my own.  Smiley

This one I made as a gift for the art teacher at my school.  She's been really awesome since I'm new to the school this year.

And this one I made for the Winter 2011 swap.

These are really just waaaaay to much fun to make.  I have two plaques painted and waiting for polymer clay whenever I get a chance to sit down and get started on them.  Cheesy

Questions and comments are totally welcomed!

Haven't jumped into poly clay myself yet but this looks like a good starter project. Just stamps and paint on the clay, right? How thick did you roll it out?

Frog, I really love my plaque. It's still on my mantel with a bunch of other fun odds and ends. It might just have to stay there even when it isn't cold anymore Tongue The art one is so beautiful too!

These aren't terribly complicated. You're just making your tiles instead of using premade tiles.  I used stamps and mica powders.  My best advice...  take a picture before you bake it!!  Roll Eyes  Otherwise you spend a lot of time going "hmmm  did this one go here? no?  here?"  lol

PB - I'm glad you still like it!  Cheesy

Those look really fun! My daughter loves to sit and play with clay. Might just have to set up a little station with some stamps and such to see if she would be interested.

So I have been playing around with clay for the last 2 days. I made a mosaic that I am pretty happy with, but I have a question.

What do you use for a base for your mosaic? Do you glue the pieces down?

I was thinking about making a base out of clay and leaving the pieces loose so that we could play with them, almost like a puzzle. Or maybe making them magnetic so they stay a little bit.

Anyway, thanks for the inspiration! My daughter and I had a lot of fun playing with the this and I expect we will do some more tomorrow.

KaoticKrafter - I used a wooden plaque that I painted.  They're really inexpensive at most craft stores. I used E-6000 to glue the pieces down and I hammered a hanging bracket on the back.  However, the magnetic idea sounds pretty awesome too.

If you want to do what I did, get all your pieces where you want them, take a picture, bake them, looking at the picture, put them back together and glue them down as you go.  I'm glad that you and your daughter enjoyed your project!

Those are both lovely! What a neat idea for polyclay art.
