I usually work in polymer clay. This is my first time using air dry clay, and my first time painting a sculpture instead of just working with it pre-colored.  I call it SSB or the Scary Swamp beast.  I made it to be able to go in my hair, but chances are it will just stay hanging up in my room where it currently is.

There is a lot I would change about it in retrospect, but for a first time, I think it is OK.  C&C welcome.  I want to improve!

Before mounting it on the barrette base:

What a clever idea putting the ssb on a Barrett. I think its too cool to be left hanging in your room...rock that beast! This rocks...literally I'm hitting the button!

Gorgeous! I love the mixed textures. A couple of questions - how did you attach the other elements, and did you seal it after painting?

Gorgeous! I love the mixed textures. A couple of questions - how did you attach the other elements, and did you seal it after painting?

I used glue for the most part, e6000 to get the front wings to stay in the wing-hole flap thingy, for the mane, to get the background silk to stay on the barrette base (barrette base = this wire screen stuff  and thick wire covered in leather which I had sewn onto the barrette with super thin wire.  Leather attached to screen with a heavy duty fabric glue).  The glitter along the mane is stuck on with Tacky glue.  The SSB is attached to wire with e6000 (covered the wire on his backside with another piece of leather over the top of the wire), pulled the wire through, twisted, and e6000 on the back of the barrette with another small piece of leather to cover the wire bit sticking out.

So basically, I just played it by ear and had a field day with glue LOL

As far as sealing it: this is 3-4 coats of acrylic paint, one of which is varathane gloss which is a sealant I use on polymer.
Thanks all for the compliments!

I'm pinning this too!  What an amazing piece!  And I agree... the little fellow should be taken on frequent outings.  You wouldn't want to upset him, would you?  Wink  Great job!

That is amazing! I rarely leave the house without a headband or fascinator, he would be perfect perched up there! I love the fibres and feathers combined with the clay.

Just checked out your other posts with the octopi, and now I'm jealous Smiley
