I made those two scarves using soluvlies, a water soluble interfacing.
I love the technique: you simple put some fibers (or fabric and lace stripes in my case) between two layers of interfacing, arrange them the way you like, stitch through the interfacing and fabric and then you wash out the interfacing - then you have a beautiful scarf (or any item of clothing, actually) made of fabric stripes  Grin

Here's the first scarf I made in all its beauty:

And with the interfacing:

The 2nd scarf:

I took photos of all the steps when I made the 2nd scarf, so here's a short (but image heavy) tutorial:

Prepare your fabric stripes (I ripped them, because I wanted them to look frayed and organic)

Cut the interfacing to the shape you like your scarf to be, arrange the fabric stripes on it:

Cover with a new layer of interfacing, pin at a few places to secure:

Start stitching! You can draw a pattern and do this neatly or go wild like I did:

Wash out the interfacing using water, rinse at least twice. If you feel that there's some of the interfacing left maybe use some soap

Put it onto a large towel to dry

And that's it =)
If your finished scarf feels stiff/hard there's probably some interfacing left, if you don't like the effect wash it again.

This is such an interesting technique! I have a group of friends who would love to make these and I think we'll have to have a scarf making party. Thanks so much for sharing the tutorial! I'll be on the lookout for some water soluble interfacing the next time I hit the fabric store.

That's what I thought about almost all of the scraps I used here  Grin
When it comes to lace or other fabrics with an interesting structure I keep the tiniest of scraps because... well, I could use them for something. I think I found my something =)

Thank you for all the comments, I'm glad you like the technique <3

I have a few skeins of Caron Simply Soft I would love to supply swap with anyone for other types of yarn, I am finding the yarn a tad hard to work with.

Jo-Ann Fabrics sells it online. I had searched for water soluble interfacing. It may be more expensive than what you'd find somewhere else (I only looked there, so I can't honestly say for sure), but at least it's a place to start!

Those are sooo pretty.  They would make fabulously unique presents too.  It doesn't get all that cold here, so scarves aren't "needed" but this would be a great accessory.
