Here is the latest in my quilling adventures.  I made this the same way I did the monograms that I made, except it was much more difficult because there wasn't just an outline of a letter to follow but an entire picture! It was a little more difficult but quite rewarding on the whole. 



This bad boy used about 20 different colours of cardstock to create and a lot more than the monograms in general.  The amount of detail on this was a lot more work so it took about 8 hours total to finish.  I used some new techniques on this as well.  I folded some paper in half and then curled it tightly around a toothpick at the fold point to get most of my wave outlines.  I also repeated the same curve over and over in the fin and tail sections. 

I also experimented with how to stop the wrinkle that happens and figured out that just by treating it like a watercolour painting and taping it down before you start reduces a lot of the torquing and twisting.


I think sea creatures and organic shapes really lend themselves well to quilling what with all the spirals and all - I wonder what other shapes might work well?

Well, seeing as I had never really done something like this before I planned all of it out except for the fin detail and interior wave swirls. I think next time I would leave the waves to my whim as they were easier to free hand. I made the original drawing so that everything would be well balanced but I may have overthought it.

Yeah, I have Lisa Nilsson's work before. It's totally wild.  I think it is absolutely fabulous,  Paper works so well with those kinds of images.
