Here is the latest in my quilling adventures.  I made this the same way I did the monograms that I made, except it was much more difficult because there wasn't just an outline of a letter to follow but an entire picture! It was a little more difficult but quite rewarding on the whole.

This bad boy used about 20 different colours of cardstock to create and a lot more than the monograms in general.  The amount of detail on this was a lot more work so it took about 8 hours total to finish.  I used some new techniques on this as well.  I folded some paper in half and then curled it tightly around a toothpick at the fold point to get most of my wave outlines.  I also repeated the same curve over and over in the fin and tail sections.

I also experimented with how to stop the wrinkle that happens and figured out that just by treating it like a watercolour painting and taping it down before you start reduces a lot of the torquing and twisting.

I think sea creatures and organic shapes really lend themselves well to quilling what with all the spirals and all - I wonder what other shapes might work well?

If you are still curious, there are more photos and tips on my blog!

This is absolutely stunning.  I've never seen quilling with this kind of detail and artistry!  When you're manipulating the paper/laying it down, how much do you usually have planned out?

Well, seeing as I had never really done something like this before I planned all of it out except for the fin detail and interior wave swirls. I think next time I would leave the waves to my whim as they were easier to free hand. I made the original drawing so that everything would be well balanced but I may have overthought it.

This is lovely! I don't know if I'd have the patience for quilling paper, but I'm blown away by people who do!

Yeah, I have Lisa Nilsson's work before. It's totally wild.  I think it is absolutely fabulous,  Paper works so well with those kinds of images.
