So, I'm new on Craftster, this is actually my first post... and this is the entire reason why I registered (though I like here, and will probably stick around). Anyhow...

I'm making a messenger bag for a friend and want to add an adjustable nylon strap. I've looked around and all I can find is plain black or white.

Does anyone know of any websites that sell decorative straps? I'd really like one with stars... or something.

Also, anyone know where to find the actual hardware for making an adjustable strap?

Thanks!

There are two different kinds...cotton and nylon.  I use the cotton strapping for my purses.  I was just at RagShop today and bought some bright pink.  They have other colors too. Big fabric stores carry different colors.
ANOTHER IDEA:  I used two kids belts to make the handles for this purse.  They are cotton, and very thick and sturdy.
Mine are tote bags, but you can see the different kinds of strapping.

As far as making the handle with an adjustment....I'm not sure ....haven't done that yet. But....when you can look at a back pack or other purse to get the jest of it.  The plastic piece you buy has directions on the back to show how to do it too.

If you're using belts... don't forget that you could always utilize the adjustable-ness that is inherent in belts for these straps...

for instance, I have an awesome purse with a long strap.  It's nylon, belt-width stuff, and it has a belt-buckle and grommets on it, so you can adjust the length, just like a belt.  It also has a D-ring sewn on (right underneath the belt buckle), which hangs straight down and acts as a little weight to keep the belt strap from coming undone (takes the place of belt loop on pants).  Make any sense?  If you need, I can try to post a picture later.  Good luck!

I'm not sure where you've been looking, but most fabric stores have a lot of choices in nylon and/or cotton webbing.  Maybe you've been trying the craft stores?  You don't have to drive around - phone the stores in your area and ask.

I would hate to pay the shipping charges for such a small item.

depphead - i love your bag! Especially the fabric inside! I'm not a huge Depp fan, but the bag is definitely awesome.

I appreciate all the ideas!! I think I'm going to do some handy work with a belt and all that jazz. Hopefully when I'm done I can post some nice photos on here!

Thanks again!
