Washable and Reusable Nursing Pads

When I was nursing one of my babies, I purchased washable nursing pads from Target...


AND WAS NOT IMPRESSED!! 


Those things leaked so bad!  I know I make a lot of milk, but sheesh!  They didn't last at all.  So, I was pretty much scared away from washable nursing pads.


But, I recently lost my job (and I'm pregnant again!) so I'm trying to conserve as much money as possible.  Among other things, this is one of the ways I'm working towards that end.  I did some readying up and found that fleece wicks away moisture so it would work as a leak-proof barrier.  I also read that a good fabric that is absorbent (and might already be in my home--so therefore free!) is flannel.  Specifically, flannel receiving blankets. 

So, I made myself a set of 30 nursing pads, which is 15 sets.  Enough for two sets a day for a week.  I HOPE that will be enough but we'll see!

2 inner layers of flannel, 1 outer layer of flannel (up against you) and 1 outer layer of fleece (against your shirt.



Zigzag stitch all the way around.  Sew over the edge.  Worked great for me!

I sell the nursing pads I make with PUL in them more than the ones without.  The mamas who have larger breasts or an abundant milk supply tend to prefer them.  I also make them in several sizes.  If you have any available, you might want to try putting some PUL with the shiny side facing in just below the layer furthest from your body and see how that works.  It still lets the skin breathe but helps prevent leaking.

Great job stitching those puppies! I have a hard time getting a nice edge with zig zag...guess that's why I have a serger lol!
