Oh, wow!  He's so pretty!  The feathers are super impressive.  Did you use markers to accent the edges?

I did use markers on the edges! I thought the layers blended into each other a bit too much without an outline.

This was actually the first paper cut project I had ever made! I was just looking at a picture of a parrot and sketched out a few outlines but pretty soon it all became freehand. Pretty sure my roomate thought I was crazy..  Roll Eyes

Oddly enough i actually found the process to be quite relaxing! I had no pattern I was following so the whole thing was really very freeform and fun to make!

This is incredible! And so colourful!

I'm working on a nursery right now and I think something like this would be soo cool in it. I'm sure it takes a lot of practice to get that good though >.>. What kind of paper do you use?

I have one more question. Around the border of each piece it looks like you've used a shade darker colour of paper underneath to give it more dimension, but in the close up it actually looks like you may have just gone around the edge with marker for that effect. Which is correct?

The paper I used came from a Joanns cardstock stack, I actually decided to make a parrot because it was a rainbow stack and didnt really have any neutrals! Also to add depth and interest i did go around most of the layers with a marker of a slightly differing hue I think it adds a little more contrast that way  Wink Like I said, this was actually my first papercut so I would definatly encourage you to give it a try, its a lot of fun and sort of like drawing with paper! I could also post some progress pictures for you if you think they'd be helpful.

Well I gave it a try. I couldn't find any colourful cardstock in town so I used construction paper. Its nothing near yours but its ok for a first attempt I think. More layers would have improved the effect I think, so I'll keep that in mind next time.

Wow!!! Im impressed! That looks great ! I originally hadn't planned to have the very delicately cut tail feathers on mine untill I decided he needed some more layers so I think you've got the right idea! here is a photo of where I basically abandoned my original sketch.
