I had my first play with polymer clay today.

I made a pair of ear gauges for a friend with a birthday tomorrow.  She does like to wear polymer clay ear gauges.  I know there is much debate out there about whether or not polymer clay is a suitable material for gauges, plugs, tunnels, etc. I think it is fantastic so may people have concern about it.  I also think it is a personal choice.  There are many factors to be weighed up, too many to go into here.  If you are considering using polymer clay gauges please do your research and decide if it is right for you.  I don't wear gauges at all - in my personal opinion, the safest way to use polymer clay gauges would be in conjunction with silicone earskins.    ...and on with the post!

I got the clay out, i conditioned, i rolled, i marbled, i rolled, i cut, i rolled, i tapered, i swirled and manipulated and came up with....

...TA DA!!!!!

I made these using Fimo effect in nightglow and transparent green.  They are approximately 6mm in diameter.  I don't have a gauge sizing chart but i did have a knitting needle gauge lying about and that helped me check the diameter.  I baked them in my oven at 110 degrees C for 30 mins.  When i removed them from the oven i dropped them into a bowl of ice water.  I have heard this helps with transparent clay.  I hadn't heard of people using it with coloured transparent clays but figured it couldn't hurt.  I would say they did seem a teeeeeeeny bit more translucent after their water dip.  Here are the finished ear gauges...

I am pretty pleased with them for my first delve into polymer clay.  I made these as a gift for a work colleague.  If they suit her lobes i will ask for a pic of her wearing them so I can share here Smiley

They look very striking I would guess they'll look very impressive in her ears!

Only thing i don't like about them is one has very little glow clay in the centre of the spiral so they don't glow as evenly - but lesson learned - think about how things will look in the dark!!!  Sadly I wasn't able to get a glowing shot of them Sad

I have 2 words for you... FAUX GAUGES!

I don't want to gauge my own ears either.  There is a great vid on youtube of faux gauges http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTXhUrGWo0s

I have my ears pierced 3 times in each lobe and I plan on making faux gauges, also with some matching studs to wear in my other piercings along side it Smiley
