Topic: Days without meat - Quorn and goat cheese salad  (Read 1073 times)

During Christian lent, Flemish and Dutch omnivores, religious and secular alike, are uniting in the initiative of "Days without meat". This event is run for the third time this year and tries to seduce people to eat less or no meat or fish for forty days. The main focus is the environmental impact of eating meat and it tells people that it also makes a big difference if you switch to vegetarian one or two days a week.

I really like that it's organised by people who also eat meat, because there is no holier-than-though attitude and every effort is appreciated. Vegetarian forums tend to scare me with their fundamentalism, I recently read a debate about whether or not you can still call yourself a vegetarian if you eat regular candy, because that's often made with gelatin, which is derived from bones. Seriously, with the attitudes in those topics, you'd scare everybody away!

This year is my first time participating in Days without Meat, and where before now, I ate a vegetarian meal maybe once every three weeks (and then probably only at dinner, not at lunch!) today is my fourth full vegetarian day of this week. Today's meal is the first one worth posting, as the previous days have been: french fries with cheese croquettes, tomatoes and cucumber with veggieburgers, fried potatoes with lettuce and Quorn fillet.

Today's dish:

It's a tart salad of oak leaf lettuce with spring onion, Granny Smith apple, dried cranberries, honey-mustard dressing, crumbled goat cheese and grilled Quorn fillet. It looks beautiful, tastes delicious and I really didn't miss the meat at all. I coupled it with some slices of bread, and I couldn't be happier with my meal Smiley

I've never heard of quorn before.  Your salad looks yummy!

It's made from a type of fungus, mycoprotein. It's currently available in 11 countries: Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Switserland, Ireland, USA, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Here in Belgium, you can't get it at all supermarkets though, only about half of them sell Quorn, and most of the time it's a limited range. It pays to look and ask about it though, I find quorn to be a very accessible meat replacement, you could fool me into thinking it was chicken!

quorn is lovely, not not all quorn is equal lol. the fillets are fab, and themince fools hubby but the burgers arn't great imho lol.
