I really wanted to make some jars with chalkboard paint labels and thought - why not try to make the paint myself while I'm at it.

It is incredibly easy! All you need is dry non-sanding grout (like for bathroom tiles) and paint. The only thing I'd mention is if you want the chalkboard paint to turn out a really vibrant color use the white grout and if you're going for the more traditional black chalkboard paint, use the black grout!

Here are a few pictures of the process and finished jars - I blogged about it a bit here http://www.soverydomestic.com/blog/index.php/2012/01/17/homemade-chalkboard-paint-and-cute-jars/

Once it's not so cold outside, I'm definitely going to go to the hardware store and pick up the stuff to make this.  The bf would be so thrilled to have a chalkboard for the kitchen.  Does the paint stick better on some materials than others?

that is sooo cool.  I didn't know you could make chaulkboard paint.  I have some chaulkboard paint projects I want to do, this will be so nice, I could make it any color.

I have used it on glass and wood with no issues. I have read that using it on canvas can be irritating to write on later because it cracks. I'd imagine any hard surface would work well and the best part is a box of grout is only about $3 and you just need a tablespoon of grout to a cup of paint.

Wow! I would imagine making your own paint is cheaper than the store bought stuff too. And I bet its more satisfying too  Grin
