A very quick quilty project to get in some FMQ practice before I tackle the 'important' one.

Cute throw Waggons!
I"m hoping to try out some free motion quilting myself in the new year.  It really intimidates me

CQ,  start small, practice and just go for it.  I find that I do better with things I routinely doodle rather than trying to follow a pattern or design.

I agree--I break the rules and cross lines, make circles randomly, spirals...I like that look anyway...

I usually do either simple straight line quilting (diagonals, boxes, etc) or I go crazy with "doodling" !

Love the leopard santa throw...what fun!

Thanks Always... (even though it probably merits another verse in my quilting anthem.  I haven't quite come up with it yet.)

The only thing I would say about crossing lines is that you need to start in the middle and work out.  Whenever you run up against previous stitching you have the opportunity to make a pleat in the backing (or on the front).  The advantage to a random design is that you can drive away from the problem area leaving perhaps a bit of a poof of fabric in the space.  But that poof is usually less obvious than a tuck or pleat would be.

That is also the reason you need to have a wider backing and batting than top.

And that explains some of the mistakes of my first quilt. Good to know.

hello lovely quilty people

do any of you have a nice little description for mug rugs that I could throw in a Secret Santa gift? since it's a secret, I want to be able to have a note explaining what a mug rug is (as I haven't come across anyone I have made one for who knows yet). I was thinking something like "bigger than a coaster, smaller than a placemat, a mug rug is a place for your cuppa and a biscuit". what do you think?

(I haven't made the mug rugs yet... they are for tomorrow. I guess I am hoping DS goes to sleep nice and early to give me enough sewing time!)

Looking for teal/turquoise/aqua, grey and white (or a combo) fabric for a quilt.

My son loves Peppa Pig's brother George and Raa Raa the noisy lion.

That is an excellent description!  Mind if I borrow it?

The only other description I've heard is a friend who calls them modern doilies.

I was actually trying to think of a way to describe them for a secret santa myself, you put it better than anything I could come up with!
