I have a question - does the item need to be made entirely out of yarn?

For example, if you spun some yarn and then incorporated that along with some unspun fiber into a felted item, would that be acceptable, or does it need to be yarn-only? I am asking because it is possible to felt with just yarn (not fulling of a knit/woven/crocheted item but just plain felting of yarn), but it is easier to do so when you can use at least a bit of fiber to help bind the yarn better.

There are also sewing techniques where you lay out yarn and then stitch all over it to form a fabric just out of yarn and the sewing thread.

Ptarmic, I feel your question is somewhat similar to the one I linked above.

Yes, that would be an acceptable method of making your finished item.  Baer in mind that it has to be a worn item, as it is fleece to Fashion, and not just end product.    Just be sure that you spin at least 51%+ of your fiber.

Question... This is fleece to fashion, and not roving to fashion? And if so: is it possible to get pre-washed fleece somewhere? I've got a raw fleece in my closet but the friend that gave it to me said she saves fleece washing days for the hottest days in summer. Being middle of winter, I don't have room for it to be laid out to dry. Roving to fashion would be easier as I have some of that. Also I have washed/combed/carded fiber that I pre-mordanted years ago but never dyed.

Also: would a bracelet or necklace from fiber count? Or only a larger "worn" thing?

Thanks Smiley

Oh,it's Fiber to fashion, any fiber you want! It can be a batt, it can be roving, and it doesn't necessarily need to be wool!

And to your second question, as long as it's fashion, it counts! So it could be a headband, or a sweater or a skirt or a bracelet!  As long as it has been spun, dyed and made into something you can wear!

Okay Bella, in the rules it States the order is fiber, dye, spin, knit/crochet whatever. But what if we spin, then dye? Is that okay? I have already started my spinning and want to dye afterwards.
if so I am totally in.

Yup, dyeing afterwards is totally cool.  So long as there is a dye component some where in the mix, it's all good!

Can't wait to see what everyone is doing this time around!  Sounds like there are at least a few entries!

Keep on trucking, Sarah!
Shannin, you can totally make something!  So long as you can wear it, and you've spun and dyed it, it's eligible!  very do able in 2 weeks, so long as you don't work 80 hrs a week and only get 10 minutes to craft Grin

Yeah, definitely. Smiley I've figured out the colors and stitch I want to use! I'll be dyeing today, spinning tomorrow. And ignoring the fact I have two midterms this week. Wink I'm also currently with my parents until my new apartment arrangements sort out and that's a 40-minute train commute each way... Plenty of time to be knitting/crocheting.

I have been done since Sunday. (Neener neener neener) I am now just trying to figure out if I want to make it again so that I can fix the flaws in my self made pattern or leave it as is. I spun way more yarn than I needed. And its already dyed so I just need to knit it.

Progress report:  I've got everything spun and a pattern picked out.  I need to dye it yet. I'm flying to go on vacation for a week, which would be lots of time to knit, but I'm afraid they will take my needles away at the airport.  Deadly weapons ya know.  So I hope that leaves me enough time to finish up when I get back.  Undecided

Even if I don't finish on time, at least this challenge encouraged me to spin for the first time. It was so fun learning and I could do it for hours.  The other night I figured I'd spin for 20 minutes before bed so I turned on an audio book at got to work.  When I looked at the clock, it was 3 hours later!  Tongue

Yea that's what I'm saying too...at least this challenge inspired me to actually knit with my handspun!

I've never ever actually knit with my handspun before this!  I *should* be able to finish...

So...like last week, I realized I was going to need more fiber to finish this.  So I ordered more from knitpicks (I was using that cheap wool from there).  Well...it is backordered until May!!  I was really mad...so I grabbed some other fiber I had and tried dying it and spinning it but it turned out a much darker color...I guess because it was different fiber?  So...I got on raverly and found some nice ladies to send me 5 more knitpicks wool that I needed.   I just got the last 3 yesterday so...I'm back in business!

Now just to spin, dye (speaking of that I need more kool-aid), and knit.  I'm going on a road trip next week until the 12th...so I'll have to post my project when I get home from that (and hopefully finish it on the trip!).  I'm glad you gave us a week to post!

Wink My dad is out of the country on business with my camera so I have nice pictures of the roving and the yarn before I plied... after plied and finished item will have crappy phone pictures (I don't have a fancy smart phone) and maybe I'll retake pictures of the finished item when he is back (Saturday).
