Designated Cutting Boards
«
on:
January 02, 2012 11:39:48 PM »
Last summer my husband was cutting a wonderful, delicious pineapple. In my haste to taste the sweet fruit, I grabbed the last piece that was sitting on the cutting board and popped it into my mouth. MMMmmmm.....erm... garlic pineapple... blech! Then in November, after we had made salsa and cleaned up, I was cutting up some cookie dough and just couldn't resist a small taste....mMmmm...er
rrmm... jalapeno cookie dough.
Even after washing the cutting boards, those strong flavors that I otherwise love were determined to ruin my other yummies. Enough! I remembered seeing a brilliant craftster solution (I am so sorry - I can't find the original post to give credit) - designated cutting boards. So - guess what my husband got for the holidays?
I burned the images into the cutting boards. I haven't done wood burning in forever. I will say that the grain on the cutting boards gave me a little bit of trouble and it isn't the most professional looking thing, but if it keeps me from ever eating another garlic pineapple again, it is worth it! (and my husband loved it!)

It is a great idea - it is also very good to keep meat and vegetables on separate cutting boards, for health reasons. And you made them very pretty.

Very cute! Definitely a great way to keep your juices from intermingling
If I may, I'd like to suggest periodically sanitizing your wooden cutting boards with vinegar. After washing, I just splash some on each side and let it sit for a few minutes in the sink before rinsing with very hot water.

These look great. I like that you have one for strong flavored veggies, I've had way too many onion flavored apples

I am so glad that you like it! I am thrilled to think that I may help someone avoid the fantastic taste sensations of garlic/onion/jalapeno flavored fruits!

Love it! I think we need a set of these: in stock - 3 wooden cutting boards and a wood burning kit ... hmmm. Thank you for the inspiration, I think they look lovely!

I like yours better than mine that I did a couple of years ago! I'm not great at the whole "fine art" type of stuff, but I was tired of the whole crossing flavor things too, and didn't see the point in paying $10+ extra just so I could buy a pre-determined cutting board (and they weren't in stores yet); much simpler to just buy a couple of bamboo cutting boards and wood burn them! :-)
Great job, and thanks for sharing.

bentindahead - are you the person that I got my inspiration from? I looked for the original post and have not found it

DawnsTrees, no I am not the one. :-P I did mine a long time ago, and I don't even remember if I was inspired by having seen it somewhere or if it was because I was in my "wood burn everything" phase. hehehehe... I never posted my cutting boards online, but thanks for asking. Hope you do find the person who inspired you. It's nice to be an inspiration, and I think you sharing will inspire many others! Craft on!

Ah! I am so so crazy about these! You've inspired me to make some for my boyfriend. He loves to cook and I know he (read:
I
) would enjoy not having to rewash the same cutting board 5 times for one meal going back and forth between veg and meats. Love it!
