I saw some Star Trek TOS inspired bathrobes on thinkgeek and decided to make the Captain Kirk version for The ManFlesh for xmas.

Before I boxed it up to wrap I used no fewer than twenty-four (24) layers of the lint roller to get all the dog hair and polar fleece fuzzies off of it.  He's been wearing it since xmas day, so the dog hair is back for the photos.   Sad

Insignia (simplified because I was finishing this up on Dec 24 and was winging it)

The cuffed sleeve where I inserted a metallic bias tape.  The store-bought version has 3 bands of gold, but no cuff so I took advantage of the cuff feature for insertion.

I made a few modifications to the pattern, the width of the tie loops being one - wider seemed both more in keeping with what Kirk would have had AND easier to turn.

One of the Alien Shedders caught and subdued by The CaptainFlesh:

And finally, the pattern I used.   Copyright 1966, it was from my mom's stash; I knew she had a mens robe pattern so I figured I save myself the money of buying one.  It's fun that it's a similar era as ST:TOS, but it has some neat details that made it take longer to assemble, like the cuffs and raglan sleeves.

I love this and so would my hubby, and with his b.day coming up I should probably get on this right away. That would net me serious brownie (read lie ins) points.

Love the gold detail and insignia (if that's the word)

Thanks!  I'm pleased with how it turned out as far as construction.

Great job!  I've Pinned it.

What's funny is that the only Star Trek he cares at all about it TOS.  I'm the Trekkie-type in the family.  Wink  I figure it's like a man buying sexy lingerie for his woman, me putting him in an Star Trek robe.  Wink

Actually this one could easily have cost more than store bought IF I hadn't gotten fleece on sale, risked cutting the "lapel" fleece perpendicular to the grain and already had a free pattern.  BUT I did all those things, and already had the metallic material for the wrists detail and insignia.   Roll Eyes

Thank you!  Please, please, please share your version when you're done!

Thanks!  I'm glad I got shots while I could, it's rather quickly turning a greyer version of the gold from dog hair.  They LOVE that thing.

I wonder how hard it would be to make a Next Gen or DS9 one?

I'm sure it's just a matter of how comfortable you are piecing together the different colored shoulders before sewing the pieces together.  Probably easier w/o the raglan sleeves?

Going to buy the proper colored fleece soon and get started. Captain Sexpot's bday is July 3rd. How much metallic material did you buy?

Yey!  For the wrist detail I just used some premade gold bias tape that comes in a 3 yard package by Wrights.  For the insignia I used a scrap I had, but it's just a few inches.  Maybe check the remnants bin for that?

I didn't know they made metallic bias tape. Awesome.

I might end up doing piping because I think I'm doing the DS9/Voyager style.

Yes!  You can get about 18' of 1" double fold bias tape from 1/2 a yard of fabric, too!

I love making bias tape!  I even bought the automated Singer machine thing-y, but I only have 2 sizes for that.  I have all the sizes in the Clover!  And someday I'll use all of them.  Wink

I do like it.  I've only made 1" and 1 1/4" tape with it, so don't know how it handles other sizes or if it would be different.  I tend to make loooong lengths all at once so it's handy, but truly I bought it specifically because I could get 1 1/4" which is what I need for my Collar Cozies.

I used my 40% off coupon at the local giant fabric store for mine which made it a lot easier to be enthusiastic about buying.  Right not I have several half-yards waiting to be made into bias tape, but were doing a small remodel so I've no time.  Sad

Just dropping in to complain. I haven't been able to get this amazingly cool bathrobe wholly out of my mind ever since MistressT posted it, so a few weeks ago I picked up a shawl collar bathrobe pattern at a sale. Then I made the mistake of asking my husband what color/job he'd like to have, assuming he'd go for either command gold or "operations" red. He picked science officer blue. Guess what color is hardest to match?

Gold fleece is easy to find. I can find suitably red flannel or fleece. Science officer blue is so elusive I may have to go with the "periwinkle" fleece at Hancock's, though it's not quite right and I have a hard time imagining Mr. Spock wearing anything called periwinkle; still, it's better than the powder blue, which is what I mostly find.

Solutions would seem to be:
1. Give up. Don't make super cool ST robe. Allow husband to continue stealing my plush winter robe.
2. Live with fact otherwise super cool robe is inadequately blue.
3. Present husband with robe in color of my choice, saying "But you're the captain of our little Enterprise, honey" or "You know you have an engineering mind and, besides, Scottish accents are sexy".
4. Make myself a gold robe first, then tell husband he has to be a redshirt because I'm the captain and I say so. Any insubordination and he'll be sent on an away mission. Cheesy

There's also "Continue dithering until cold weather is past, then expand search to include less warm fabrics", but that seems like less of a solution and more of a delaying tactic.

NOOOOOOOOO!  Hmmmm.  I recently was asked to make another version of the dog vest I made using the scraps from this project and found a pretty suitable blue, but it was NOT with the other polar fleece at my local JoAnn, it was with a special section of "team colors" for the local state universities along with the gold.  Perhaps your search will be added with "team" colors in mind?
