Brackish--that afghan is stunning! What is the pattern or stitch called?  It looks like stained glass!

thank you and yes. he got it just for me to dye at this yarn dying party. but the day kept getting pushed back. i used some of it earlier ,but thats the last of it.

I just got my Knit Picks catalogue and I am so tempted to buy yarn to dye...I have been dyeing fabric and paper using natural materials and would love to try it with yarn...

Always, I took a natural dying class over 30 years ago! Lots of varying greens and browns, muted colors. Using different mordants would make the same material different colors! We did get to do one batch with cochineal and one with indigo to get red/purple/blue tones, and would reuse dyebaths to get paler colors. Oh, man...onion skins make a lovely gold/yellow, but you need a lot of them. Ironweed, as bright purple as it is, makes a brown dye. We used tomato vines, elderberries, I forget what else now. But it was a lot of fun!

i've been dying paper too, such lovely results from onion skins . I'm itching to try it during paper making too.

It's a free pattern from Bernat that I got off Ravelry. It's just called Afghan #3663. I love the stained glass look, too!

He was a birthday gift for my son and I was pretty proud of myself because I made up the pattern as I went along.

I started that pattern, but with out the black stripes. I only got two rows of color before I gave up. I didn't feel like counting single/double/triple crochets. I prefer mindless patterns.

In my hippie days, I was into this a lot...I think I still have my original list of colors, etc...just have to find the notebook!  I dyed some paper using hibiscus tea...I love it because the colors go from pinks to indigo, because of the flowers used!  It is random and I would love that for yarn!  Also, with natural dyes, you can use them cold...I might try testing them on some wool sweaters to be felted!

Thanks for the afghan pattern--I have always wanted to do a stain glass afghan!

Oh, yes, those were the days, . And the really cool people had a color-wheel hanging on their wall, made of natural hand-dyed wool in the colors of the rainbow. I was never that cool, I just made a bit in a yellow-gren color - I think it was the easiest to make.
