Hello Craftster!

I know I tend to peek my head in here about once a year, and I'm very sorry about that.  But it seems I only really pick up my hook around the holidays (New Years Resolution: crochet more).

As the thread title indicates, I only seem to make Epic Projects, such as the Tetris afghan and the Pac-Man Scarf (back).

This year brings yet another enormous, time-consuming project that I finished very early this morning (a Christmas miracle!). This time, I was a good girl and tried to document the entire process. Be prepared, there's a ton of photos here.

I'm posting the final image first so that it shows up in the forum index. Is that vain? I don't care. Wink

BEGIN

It started with squares

Lots of squares

No joke

A face appears!

I'll stop making dumb captions now

OMG it's done!

Then I finally started using Instagram (SheriB626, if anyone is interested)

The way I was joining squares did not lend itself to hiding ends, so I wound up having to sew in ALL OF THE ENDS. I don't recommend it to anyone who wants to keep their sanity.

Finally finished!

And now, the Official Photos!

I am SO EXCITED. This is a Secret Santa swap gift, and while I've been sharing my progress with the group that's doing it, my giftee has no idea that it's going to him.  So everyone is pretty much going "OMG I hope Sheri is sending it to ME!"  I can't wait to ship it, my only regret is that it obviously won't be there by Christmas.

Thanks for looking everyone!

I'm working on one of these right now.  It's my BIL's Christmas present, but...well, I can just give it to him in February, and he'll be so surprised and touched at a random, large present (until my dear sister, in her trademark way, goes, "Uhh, that was your Christmas present.")

It looks great!  What hook size did you use?

Such an awesome project.

What granny square pattern did you use for this?  I have something similar planned for the boyfriend, but I can't find a granny square that I like enough to make that many times.

Hey everyone, thanks so much!

To answer a few of the questions:

- It's 16x16 on its longest sides, 4.5 inch squares, so it's about 6 feet either direction!
- Size J hook (6.0)
- I honestly can't remember what square pattern I used, but it's super duper simple.  These squares are NOT as solid as the ones for the Tetris afghan, so they work up quicker.  It's essentially 3dc, ch1 along the sides, and 3dc, ch1, 3dc in the corners.  If I find the link with the pattern for it, I'll post it here.
- Question mark afghan is in the long line of projects I'll get to some day!

Also to follow up, my Secret Santa person LOVED it!  Cheesy

I thought this was so cute so I showed my fiance and now he wants one.  I've never actually completed a granny square project (or project this large) so it should be pretty interesting!

I just have one question: how much yarn does this take?

My kids grew up with Mario.  This is awesome!!! Nice job.  I wish I had the patience to make one for my son.  He would probably act like it was corny, but secretly he would love it.  Grin

Absolutely incredible! I've been working on trying to do some pixel art with granny squares for a while, but haven't gotten past the troublesome part of-- you know-- making all the squares. Kudos for 1.) making ALL THE SQUARES and 2.) for sewing in all the ends. If it would have been my secret santa, I would have given them two gifts: the blanket and a yarn needle Wink

Fabulous work!

I finally finished mine!

I've been wanting to make pixel afghans for a long time, and when I saw the mushroom, and realized I had most of the yarn in my stash, I had to give it a try! I started making this in January and worked at a very slow pace. I used the join-as-you-go method (I just couldn't see myself sewing the pixels together) and started working at several smaller pieces that I then joined. The black border took surprisingly long to add.
Now it's done and I'm happy! I made it from cotton, and it's cuddly and airy.
I miss the mindless granny-ing and think I'd like to make another pixel afghan soon.
