Medieval dress sew-along

I've been looking a bit more closely at others of Waterhouse's medievalesque paintings and seeing more details of the construction of the dresses.  The Lady of Shallot series seem to pretty clearly indicate a seam at the waistline and a gathered skirt, as the costumer did for the Lady of Shallot movie in the link above. And I think I can see a possible  waist area seam in the Miranda painting.... So that is what I'm currently thinking about emulating, even though it is by no means medieval dress construction (they never had waist seams), but is Pre-Raphaelite or at least "Waterhouse".    This construction would entail less cutting and fewer very long seams....

absolutely beautiful.
 
I have started a bliaut out of a lovely light red cotton silk fabric.
Mostly because I can add embroidery to the hem and neckline of this style.
I am doing a fairly plain rectangle and triangle construction, but have just found some research about construction that is interesting, so if I do another ( I have a lovely green fabric also) I might try the finely pleated version.

well I finished the bliaut, and I am so happy with it!
Red cotton silk, hand sewn, took about two weeks in my spare time to make.





before sleeves, hehe


Also made a pink surcoat for my sister, who doesnt need it anymore, le sigh, so might just see if anyone else has a use for it.
Mostly machine made curtain fabric with a small amount of embroidery.





I am now working on a dark blue overdress and planning a pale blue underdress.
I am also going to make a fur lined muff and a cloak.
further down the list is a felted hat and spinning.

Have made a few things since I last posted, heres some pics of me wearing the red bliaut finished with a reversable cloak I have made.







I have also made a fully lined linen under dress, with tablet woven braid at neck and wrists, blue linen gown, and a blue wool cloak.
Still hoping to finish a head scarf, belt, and muff by the weekend if time permits.

Heres the grey gown finished,
12th Century, wool, handsewn, trimmed with wool at neck and hem, linen lined sleeves, silk embroidery.



very warm which I will need next weekend!
