Okay, so I've been browsing the Where to find Things to Recycle board, and I'm so jealous of people that live in other parts of the country.

Why, you ask?  Because they have awesome places to find "trash for treasures"!  Does ANYONE know about ANYTHING like this in the Greater Baltimore area?  I'm not picky--as long as it's within an hour and a half of my house (baltimore county), I'll be there!

I mean, of course, anything outside that radius is good too--the world doesn't revolve around me (I sadly came to that realization a few weeks ago.  It's tough, knowing that I'm not the center of the universe).

Okay, so I'm in a weird mood.  Seriously, though.  Does anyone have any tips for places like this?  It would be awesome.

Have you checked www.freecycle.org and signed up for one of their mailing lists?  Not sure how things are in Baltimore, but on the DC-area list there are always several items a week that might come in handy for crafting.  There's always the Craigslist "free" section, too (baltimore.craigslis t.com).

Both require frequent checking (free things go quickly!), but you never know what you'll find.  I just checked Baltimore on Craigslist, and this afternoon someone's giving away expensive acrylic paints and brushes.

I know what you're talking about cloudbreak:  I'm a Jersey boy- we had 2 places near me- one was an architectural salvage place (BRILLIANT- pricey sometimes, but always had exactly what you were looking for and a ton of things you weren't but HAD to have.) and the other was a habitat for humanity thrift store (dealt with building materials and was an AMAZING place to find things to refurbish/recycle/reuse...)
I, too, am in Baltimore (right on the city/county line) and can't find anything like that here...  If you come up with anything, please let me know!!!

It sucks!

Although, now that I think about it, it's probably a good thing (for my wallet, at any rate)...  but still not good!

Anyone got any ideas?  I did sign up for the Freecycle in my area, but people post more wanteds than anything else, and its usually for cars and other big ticket items.  So depressing.

Oh, I know there is some kind of architectural salvage place.  I'll have to ask.  My boyfriend has an art studio in this old warehouse and the artists who own the whole place told him about the salvage place to get a door for his space.
I will try to get the info.  But rest assured, it's out there somewhere.

hey, I used to live in MD - Montgomery County, not Baltimore, sorry - but driving around doing "curbside shopping" on trash day was the best!!  Actually the night before trash day.  People leave out great, fun stuff.

And absolutely check craigslist.org

Good luck!

Ok, I'm pretty sure this is the place, Second Chance, www.secondchanceinc .org.  It's down past Camden Yards.  I've never been there, so I can't really vouche for the place, but they do have a retail store.  Might be pricey.
