I have a bunch of loose hairs... is crotcheing (don't think thats spelled right) the best method to get all the loose hairs into the nearest dread? or are there other method anyone would like to share with me?
I used a yarn needle to get some super long pieces of hair back in.

Try a floss threader:

One usually uses it to thread floss under bridges and dental devices.

I'm actually in the process of combing out my dreads, but I used a crochet hook to deal with loose hairs. A small one, like 2mm or so. A floss threader would be my second choice.

^I'm combing them out too.

I preferred to use a latch hook (dread sites sell them as dread tools) to get rid of those loose hairs.

Combing them out seems to be happening a lot lately...
I had to take mine out too...

I wish I could get them to look good... The first set I had looked killer, but work made me take them out...years later, I finally got the chance to do it over, after the birth of my son, and I did them so they'd be the same age as him...that was in the spring...I've had to comb them out because they got so thin and gross looking. My hair is very fine, and I can't get enough coverage from dreads. If I do big ones, I get like 10 on my head (lame) and if I do small ones (which I relaly like) I can see my scalp all over...it looks like a bunch of rat's tails stuck to my scalp... Sad

For those of you who combed out, how long were your dreads before you combed out and how short was your hair after??

My dreads were about half an inch below the bottom of my ears? Maybe a smidge longer...after combing out, my hair hit my shoulders...Now it's just past that...It's been two months, but I had a trim to take off some of the dead ends...My hair's so straight that they just make it look dull and dead...

I'm still in the process of combing out, but I will post photos when I'm done.
I don't have an actual reason to take my dreads out, I've just had enough of them for now. I'll probably put them back in in a year or so.

Well mine were shrinking when i took them out, and were about shoulder length. When I took them out, they were to the middle of my back.
