It's always nice to have some things in your dorm to remind you of home.  Maybe a picture of the entire family? You could also get him a bottle of odor remover spray stuff. A bunch of 18 year old guys living in one room, that can't smell too good.

lets see...

dry cereal is crucial for snacking
a "do not disturb" doorknob sign
shot glasses
Febreeze odor remover is a great idea
Downy wrinkle releaser is maybe even more usefull
A roll of quarters
Monster or some other energy drink for finals
A pre-paid calling card
Easy Mac
high powered water guns

And I definitely second the ear plugs idea!

Sounds like this is going to be great!  Good luck!

If you ever teach a yodeling class, probably the hardest thing is to keep the students from just trying to yodel right off. You see, we build to that.

a board game or a deck of cards is always usefull. popcorn. soda. movies [maybe used VHS you can buy at a second hand shop for really cheap] it sounds weird, but a hammer and nails. i think i was the only one with a hammer and nails in my room and somebody was always using it. [then again, a lot of people had homeade lofts so we could actually nail things into them]. duct tape for sure. its the cheapest and easiest way to fix anything in the dorms.

Safety pins. Not only will they hold shirt closed, but also keep your sheets on the bed,  hold papers together, be a key "ring", remove a splinter in a pinch.   At one point, they would have would also have been jewelry AND a  fashion accessory, but that depends....

A first-aid kit w/ the typical band-aids, anti-septic lotion, etc as well as general cold medicine and aspirin/tylenol could come in very handy. The only thing worse than getting injured/sick is getting injured/sick and then having to search for bandages/drugs.

Ramen is usually a good thing to have around too.

Oh yeah, a manual can opener is really useful when it comes to quick meals/snacks of soup or other canned foods.

A few things that people always borrowed from my dorm room:

-Scissors
-Duct Tape
-Small screwdriver set (you can get ones cheap that have flathead/phillips, etc. attached to the screwdriver. you just have to change which bit you put in)
-Stapler (even the mini ones)
-Scotch tape
-Tums
-Aspirin/Tynenol
-Microwave food
-Disposable napkins, plates, silverware, cups, etc.
-Koolaid (pre-sweetened)
