need a gift idea for my dad

I need a gift idea for my dad for Christmas, he is in his 50's likes to work out, listen to music on his ipod, and i don't know what else.  i don't know what kinds of colors he likes.  he likes to read magazines.  my mom got him a nook color last year, but he hardly uses it.  he also likes sports, we live in Milwaukee, WI and so he is a huge packer, brewer, etc. fan.  he does not wear scarfs, and I already got him a hat before that he wears.  I'm not sure what type of style he has, but it is not a kitschy, crafty style.  I would like to make him something that he would like and actually use. I am low on funds this year and cannot afford to buy a gift so I have to make one. I can crochet, bead, do needlepoint, etc.

I am thinking embroidered packers towels, pillow, or heating pack for when he is sore from working out?  Does he run?  what about making a pair of jogging mitts that has a small pocket for holding his keys, and an ipod armband/holder.
