This was a gift for the lovely luckdragon Smiley

I found the basic paisley shape in a non-needlework pattern, and then just did my own thing with selecting stitches and colours.

It was stitched using silk thread (soie d'alger, 2 threads) on a coarsely woven silk fabric. I used a variety of simple stitches, including chain stitch, coral stitch, blanket stitch, colonial knot, and cretan stitch. It was fun working with a non-rectangular shape. I tried to keep the stitching fluid and casual rather than being too precise about measuring everything out. I'm really pleased with how it turned out, and I think luckdragon likes it too Smiley

I'd love to hear your comments and suggestions for future cuff-y stitch-y things!

You are such an incredible artist, jemimah! At first I thought it was a hair clip (which also would be lovely in this technique) but when I saw it was a cuff I nearly fell out of my chair!! Soooo wonderful!

How is it working with silk thread? Is it slippery?

Thanks everyone!! Smiley

Oooh, a hairclip would be nice! Great idea Smiley

How is it working with silk thread? Is it slippery?

Working with silk thread is just LOVELY. The soie d'alger, which is like a silk equivalent of stranded floss (I think it's the most common silk embroidery thread, but you can get several other types and gauges of silk too), is gorgeous to stitch with. It's light, holds its shape, and sits where you put it. You use it just like regular floss, but the colours and lustre are so much nicer; photos don't really do it justice.

It's nothing like the shiny rayon/satin thread (sometimes also called artsilk). Which can give really cool effects, but can be a real PITA to stitch with sometimes.

WARNING: if you start stitching with silk thread, you may never be happy with anything else. Possible side effects include considerable time lost to playing with pretty skeins, obsession with obtaining every colour under the sun, and severe damage to your bank balance.

I'd pin this on a jacket lapel or collar for some fun. Now, off to the sewing machine to actually finish what I started.

This is completely amazing!  I love the variety of stiches and the colors are excellent.  What stitch was used on the curly parts on each end by the leaves, the part in blue?  I think the same stitch is used in the goldenrod straight border around the main part of the paisley teardrop, too.  That one interests me and I'd be interested in learning how to do it Smiley

Oh, and I'm totally pinning this when I get home...pinterest is blocked as 'social networking' at work Angry

I will have to say that jemimah introduced to me silk thread....I am not sure if I love her or hate her... Grin

It is beautiful and you can see from this piece, just how gorgeous it is (well, of course the design and stitching is very important as well!)....

Beautiful work...just beautiful...

I will continue to be inspired to learn and do more stitching from needlework artists like you! (

The pale blue squirly bits and the pale gold main teardrop shape are just chain stitch, very simple. The other "lines" are coral stitch, one of my faves - it has a fun knotty texture. Smiley

I'd love to hear your comments and suggestions for future cuff-y stitch-y things!

Love the idea, the colours, but would prefer if i was more loose around the wrist. Which is difficult, I have the same issue with my own handcuff.

But lovely anyway Smiley
