One of the benefits of my fiancee working where he does is that I have a never-ending, all-you-can-eat buffet of wooden pallets to craft with.  Today's obsession was born our of inspiration on Pinterest, a truck bed full of pallets, and a desperate need to make something using power tools.

What I started with:

I spent the better part of an hour wrestling with the pallets, using hammers, needlenose pliers, and MY BARE HANDS to rip them apart.  I felt like some kind of awesome, wood-hating bear.  Once I finally got all the boards I wanted, I lined them all up hot dog style to equal six feet.  I rummaged through the garage for some 1"X4" and whipped out the circular saw and went preg_replace('/(.{19})/', '$1 ', 'GZZZBZZZZZZZZZRRRRZZZZZ') until I had two pieces that were 1"X4"X6'.  Grabbing my (roommate's) trusty drill, I laid the two 6' boards across the pallet pieces and screwed about 70 screws (seriously) through to the pallet pieces.  I added a couple of legs and VOILA! Rustic, but super awesome headboard for my room.

BASK! BASK IN THE FANTASTIC!

Cost:
Pallets: Free
1X4: Free
Screws: 6$

That's some inexpensive ambiance right there!  I feel a need to make everything ever rising up inside me.

Very nice! Have you seen the tiny houses built out of pallets? Google it, they are so cool.

I love it, it's so beautiful!

My only question is does it give you splinters?  Its my experience that pallet wood can be pretty splintery... I've been super tempted by some of these pallet projects around the web, but I'm just hesitant because I've been torn apart by a pallet before. lol.

Anyhow... Awesome! Cheesy

I brushed it down with a pretty hard bristled brush to get any loose splinters out of the way.  It also sits about 4" behind my bed.  That said, it's only been up for one night, so I'm sure I'll wake up one morning with my hand all jacked up wih bits of wood haha  Risk was worth the reward for me!

It does look cool, I'm impressed! Are you concerned at all about the chemicals they use to treat those pallets though?

This is great, and I know how hard it is to get those things apart! I made an ugly garden bed out of them. I would love to make something good looking. Not sure if I am up to the tear it apart phase of that job again though! You did great! Smiley

you can use them for wainscoting too. You can screw those 1X4's to the wall top and bottom, with a spacer behind them equal to the thickness of the pallet boards, make the 1X4's about two pallet boards short of the end of the wall on one end . Be sure the spacers allow at least one inch of the 1X4's to extend past the spacers to make a pocket, then slip the pallet boards in from the open end.. You need only screw the last two boards in to hold them all. Now finish off with a short piece of 1X4 top and bottom at the area you used to slip the boards in, then cap the whole thing with a 1X3 laid flat OR a piece of door molding. You can get fancy with this technique. If you have a table saw, you can make those edges perfect and they look great sanded and stained or just coated with some linseed oil. Doesn't take long to sand them with an electric sander BEFORE you put them up, impossible to do after. plan ahead. Oh, and if you have a table saw, to can even use those 2X4 ends as the cap.

Omg! This is so amazing. I'm always impressed with with shipping pallet recycle projects. I have my mattress laying on the floor right now and I've been trying to figure out an inexpensive way to make it look nice. This + a $40 frame from ikea is sounding pretty good! Thanks for the inspiration <3

I tried talking my hubby into letting me do this with old fence planks we were taking down, but he thought that was taking upcycling too far. Now I see it would have looked ...AWESOME! Good job I like how you've done the rest of the room too!

I love this! I made a headboard out of an old Balinese screen that we found on the road http://bornagain-creations.blogspot.com.au/2011/03/2-recycled-screen-headboard.html but I love the rustic look of the pallets.
