I have been practicing all day and I am having some trouble:

After I spin a length I then wrap around the spindle, loop up through hook and get ready to spin again..then..as I flick the spindle, the spindle will drop down and a bunch of already spun yarn will fling out and get all wrapped up in the hook.  I unwrap it and gt ready to do it again and the same thing happens.  I wish I had a notch cut out on the whorl so I could secure the yarn there but I don't have that so what am I ding wrong and what do I need to be doing right?

Try winding the yarn on the spindle the other way!  It sounds like when you are flicking the spindle, the yarn is being unwound.

I spin my spindle in the clockwise direction, then wind my yarn on with the spindle still going in the clockwise direction.

I don't have a notch cut in my spindles.  Even if you did and you spun clockwise and wound the yarn with the spindle turning counter-clockwise, you will still have the same problem.

Thanks MLF, That did occur to me so I thought I was careful about wrapping clockwise but now I'm not sure so today I will watch careful how I wrap.

ooak_diva,
Your spindle will be traveling in the clockwise direction, but the yarn is actually being wound in a counter-clockwise direction.

Just make sure when you're winding on, the spindle is going in the same direction as the direction when you are spinning.

I practiced last night and thanks MLF for the tip; it works!  I made sure I was aware of how I wrapped on and I didn't have one episode of flying yarn all night.  Thanks!

I think this post solved my issue... though I'll have to try it later. I only had trouble with this happening when my spindle got close to being full, but it's still frustrating.
